Chapter 5

EPOV

I was standing by the baseball field, next to Emmet watching Vinny’s game. The women were all sitting talking about whatever the fuck women talk about. Emmet was scrutinizing the team on the field. I just listen because for fucks sake it’s a four and five year old T-ball game. I heard a commotion, drawing my attention to the grassy area on my left. A dog was running with its leash dragging behind him. He made his way straight toward me stopping at my feet. I bent over to retrieve the leash so he wouldn’t take off again. After having secured it and standing erect, recognition over took me. She wasn’t looking at me; her thoughts were on the dog. Once she was close enough she began to admonish the animal. I thought it was cute that she was calling him naughty, and threatening him with no treats, because last night we talked about treats, and I would love to reward her with a piece of chocolate. As she started to apologize to me for her dog I wanted her to look at me, to acknowledge my presence. Her name was on the tip of my tongue; it took all my strength to keep from pulling her into my arms. I conveyed that desire into her name “Isabella”

When her attention was finally off the dog and on me, all I could see was this woman. She was stunning. Her cheeks were slightly flushed from running; her hair was wrapped in some kind of mess that showed off the length of her neck, and the angle of her cheek bones. She was dressed in tight pants that hugged her curvaceous hips and round plump ass. The gray t-shirt showed off the tiniest bit of her flat stomach while accentuating the fullness of her breast. Breast that I wanted to touch, suck and bite until she screamed. She had a natural beauty that was genuine and very feminine. She was a walking wet dream.

After I handed her back the leash, a russet skin women who was obviously pregnant came over. She chastised the dog also, saying something about a brat and who the dog was named for. Isabella named her dog after someone? Who the fuck could that be? I was slightly pissed off about that. Isabella then introduced her friend, Leah - her step-sister- she looked at me when she said that Leah was Jacob’s wife. I chuckled a little when my father told mom that Isabella was my …friend. I looked at Isabella’s face; it was the prettiest shade of pink from her embarrassment of being caught yesterday.

They all stood there talking, I was analyzing the last few days. I literally bumped into this woman two nights ago. Since that night, she has become a part of my life, a part that I’m not sure I want to go away. She’s beautiful and sexy, but she has some things that we are going to have to talk about. Last night when I ran into her at the pub, I was dumbfounded. I had called to talk to my father in the afternoon and he asked if I wanted to meet him for dinner there. I had never been to that establishment before, but I didn’t have any plans so it sounded good to me. I was actually early when I walked in; there was laughing coming from one of the booths. When I looked over and saw Isabella, I was dazed and drawn to her. Once I realized that my father somehow or another knew her co-worker I was even more convinced that maybe something bigger than me was leading us towards each other.

I had a wonderful time sitting there with her. She has a compassion that transcends anyone I ever knew. I believe she was upset that I paid the bill, but hey, chivalry is not dead. Once we were outside I put my arm around her, in order to keep her from getting a chill. Her body fit inside mine so perfectly, it just felt right. I had women that I would do a scene with, that’s all they were, a means to an end. I wondered how many men she had been with, and if it was fulfilling for her. When I heard that she was only with one, her husband, I was floored.

Perhaps I acted on that knowledge the wrong way but I had to know when the last time she was with him was. All I heard was the question ‘willingly’. My temper flared because what the fuck did that mean? She wasn’t willing? So he raped her? And she blamed herself because she couldn’t fight him off. A feeling of protectiveness came over me. I wanted to hunt him down and rip his god damn balls off. But at that time, she needed comfort and I gave it to her, and it felt so right.

Then when we got to the building and she was telling me the need for secrecy, at first I was offended. Then I thought about it, she trusted me with something very important. The look in her eyes, the desire hidden deep inside, I wanted to feel that desire, I needed to see it unleashed. That kiss was phenomenal; I could feel her repressed passion coming out to the surface. All I wanted to do was take her home and see how much more she was concealing. I heard the gasp and the throat clearing, it didn’t matter to me, I’m an adult who is very secure in my sexuality. That was my father though, and Isabella’s reaction was too cute. When we left my father made a comment about getting a kiss like that. I thought; fuck that shit, not from my girl. Yes my girl. Mine!

All through dinner we talked about the center, what they do there, what their goals are. He asked me if I knew why she worked at the center for free. I told him what I knew, which admittedly wasn’t much. I did tell him that I felt a connection to her. Like there was some force somewhere pulling us together, for whatever reason.

Once I got home, I wanted to make sure that she arrived home safe. She didn’t answer, fifteen minutes later I thought maybe she had stayed at the center, she seemed worried about someone there, and by ten o’clock I was starting to get worried a slightly frustrated. I was debating what to do. I had no idea where she lived. The number she gave me was a cell, so I couldn’t do a reverse directory. I thought about looking up Jacob’s phone number, but he wasn’t listed in the phone book. I was just about ready to call Aro; I thought maybe he might have another number for her, or better yet an address. As I picked up my phone, I got her reply. Relief washed over me like a warm summer rain. I could feel the anxiety melt away as I read “Sorry, I was in the bath tub, I’m home safe - My mind went to Isabella in a bath filled with fruity smelling bubbles. Shaking that thought away, we spent the next few minutes replying back and forth. She needed sleep and I didn’t want to keep her up any longer than necessary.

Now today here she is, again. I have been at this park hundreds of times, I live four streets behind her, we work at the same place, and we went to the same college. All these things in common and yet we never met until now. Why? Is it fate? Coincidence? Have the stars and planets aligned in the perfect order? I just don’t know, but as Leah turns to leave, all I can think about is Aro’s words. ‘She’s a diamond in the rough....she needs to be refined....make her shine. I can see her confident, secure, and content in whom and what she is. And she is shining.

I become aware of the fact that Isabella is looking at me, her mouth pressed into a hard line. She lets out an exaggerated breath. “Well, it was nice to see you all. I’m going to finish the trail and head home”

Wait, she was leaving? I was just going to ask her to stay when Alice spoke up “Bella wait. What are you doing today?”

“Well, I have some work to do. Then I have to go shopping.”

Alice perked up “Where are you shopping at?” Isabella

“umm...The Superfresh?” It came out like a question, and I grinned because that was not the kind of shopping Alice was thinking about. “Ohhh...That’s no fun” Alice whined

“Anyway we are having lunch at my house, it’s nothing special just some burgers on the grill. Why don’t you come over?” Isabella looked stunned, then she glanced at me “I don’t know Alice; I don’t want to intrude in your family stuff.”

“Bella, you’re not intruding if I invited you. Come on we got plenty of food. It’s a nice day, the pool’s not open yet, but the hot tub is. Besides I have something I want to show you.” Alice looked at me with a grin. She told this morning that she had a design for Isabella and was wondering how to bring it up. I guess she figures she can dazzle her with Jasper’s grilling skills and that with soften the blow.

“Come on, just for a few hours, you’ll be home in plenty time to do your other stuff.” After she didn’t get a reply she added “I’m not going to take no for an answer.” I could see Isabella’s resolve waiver “Ok, but just for lunch I really have a lot to do.”

Alice looked pleased with herself. I smiled and shook my head because Alice always gets her way, and here was my chance to spend more time with Isabella “If you wait until the game is over, I’ll walk with you, and then we can walk to my house and go together.”

She hesitated - did she not want to go with me “Are you sure you don’t mind?”

Why the fuck would I mind? “No, I would like you to come with me.” Finally she agreed and my father called her over so she could sit in his chair, with the women. Dad came over to stand by me. “I like her Edward, she seems genuine.”

I knew what he was talking about; Isabella didn’t put on a show for anyone. She was just herself, modest, shy and a little unsure of herself. The whistle blew, calling an end to the game. The kids lined up to shake hands, then went over to the bench to get instructions and snacks. Jasper went over to get Vinny, while the women folded up their chairs. Isabella came to hand hers to my dad. “Thank you for the use of the chair, Carlisle”

“You’re more than welcome Bella.”

We were all standing there as Vinny came running over, juice box and animal crackers in hand. “Hey Uncle Emmet, did you see that ball I hit?” he had juice running down his chin.

“Sure did buddy, that was great.”

“Uncle Eddie, did you see how fast I ran?”

Yes he’s the only one that calls me Eddie. “I did, I think pretty soon you’ll be able to beat me.” He smiled and looked at Isabella and pointed making a face “Who’s that?” he asked. Alice chimed in “Vincent it’s not nice to point.” I chuckled as my sister introduced them

“This is Bella, she and mommy went to school together.” Isabella squatted down so she was eye level and stuck her hand out. “It’s very nice to meet you Vinny.” He shook her hand “You’re pretty.”

Emmet and Jasper made comments about him being a ladies’ man. My dad whispered in my ear “Kid got good taste” and I had to agree. Isabella smiled “Well, you’re kind of handsome yourself.”

“If you went to school with my mom, are you old too?” Everyone snickered. My mother tried to correct him “Vincent, you don’t ask a lady how old she is.” Isabella just giggled “Well I don’t know, what do you call old?”

“Umm...fifteen.” Isabella chuckled “Then yes I’m very old.” Emmet gahuffed “That means I’m middle aged and gramps here is ready for the retirement home.” He added as he patted dad on the back.

Vinny looked down at Seth “Is that your dog?”

“It is. This is Seth” she added. Vinny made a face.

“Seth?” he asked with distaste “Why did you name him Seth?”

She bite her lip and sighed. I was wondering who the dog was named after myself and now I really wanted to know because of her reaction. “I have a bother.”

“Is he old too?” Vinny interrupted

“He’s almost eighteen.”

“That’s not old.” he said shaking his head.

“No, that’s not old. My brother’s name is Seth and doggy Seth was born on his birthday and when I looked at the puppy, he looked just like my brother. So I named him Seth.” Vinny looked at her in shock. “Your bother looks like a dog? Does he have fur?”

She chuckled “No he doesn’t have fur. But his skin is the same color brown, and his eyes are the same color. I’ll tell you what; maybe one day I will show you a picture of my brother so you can see what I’m talking about. How does that sound?”

“That sounds like we have a deal”

“OK, little man lets go” Alice said as Isabella stood back up. I took Isabella’s hand in mine and started to turn. Vinny scrunched up his face “Look mommy Uncle Eddie is holding Bella’s hand. I thought she was your friend.”

Emmet put his arm around Isabella’s shoulder ‘Vinny my man, Bella is every ones friend. But she is Uncle Eddies...special friend.” I turned to gape at him; Rose came over taking his other hand “Don’t say that to him.”

“What? Look at these two, they know each other like three days and they can’t keep their eyes off each other. That’s a good thing. We all need a special friend.”

Isabella was biting her lip, and turning redder by the second. “Vinny my man, don’t you have a favorite friend you play with all the time?”

“Emmet!” I growled. Could someone please shut him the fuck up? Rosalie came to my rescue “Let’s go Emmet, We will see you all at the house.” she pulled his free arm, making him let go of Isabella’s shoulder and they walked to the parking lot.

“Bella I’m so sorry about Emmet, I swear I raised him right.” my mother said with concern. Jasper spoke next “Words just come out of his mouth, before his brain can catch up. That’s all, but he’s harmless.”

Isabella started giggling “That’s ok really, I just kept wondering what he was going to say next.” Alice was giggling too, “Oh my god when he said special friend I thought Edward was going to kill him.” I chuckled ‘I was thinking about it.”

“Ok everyone at my house in half-an-hour. Is that doable for you guys?” she was looking at me. “Give me forty-five, that should be good.” Jasper clapped my shoulder “Minute man, huh?”

I groaned, Isabella was chewing on her lip, and my father was chuckling. Alice and my mother just stared at him. He started laughing “I couldn’t resist.”

Vinny pulled on his shirt “Dad…What’s a minute man?”
Alice held on to Vinny’s hand “Come on we have to go home and wash up.”

“But I want to know what a minute man is.” Alice glared at her husband “See what you did? Forty-five minutes, so you better get moving! Oh and Bella, Don’t forget your suit.” she called over her shoulder as they walked away.

We stood there with mom and dad chuckling as Alice put her husband in his place. “Can we give you two a lift, at least to Bella’s house? That might save some time.”

“No I think we will be fine with time. We have to go though.” I kissed my mother on the cheek “See you soon.” Isabella said good-bye and we started walking.

“So, is that the full Cullen Monty?” she asked with a snicker. I nodded “Pretty much, you won’t get the full effect until you see them eat.” she laughed.

“I am sorry if Emmet embarrassed you, he doesn’t mean any harm. He’s like a big kid at heart. But he’s loyal to his friends and even more so to family.” We had to stop for Seth by a tree. She looked at me “Really Edward, I didn’t mine. I was just shocked that he would think we had that kind of a relationship, that’s all”

I thought about that for a minute we were exiting the park, and stopped to allow a car to pass on the street. “What did you mean?”

“What?”

“What did you mean when you said that he would think we had that kind of a relationship?” We started walking again, and I was waiting for an answer to my question. What did she think our relationship would involve? I just told her yesterday that I feel something for her that I have never felt before. I was going to ask again in a more insistent manor when she sighed, drawing my attention to her face. She looked like she was concentrating really hard. “Isabella, tell me what you are thinking. I need to know.”

She sighed again “Edward I just don’t know what to think. I mean…this” she held our joined hands up. “This feels so right, but ... I’m not a special friend...I’m not really anything to you. I just...I don’t know, what kind of a relationship we have, if we have any at all.”

I couldn’t really blame her, we hadn’t talked about what we want from this relationship, but in a way I was upset that she didn’t understand.

“You look upset. I shouldn’t have said anything.” I shook my head “No, I want, no I need to know what you are thinking and feeling at all times - especially this early in our involvement. That doesn’t mean I like or understand why you feel that way.” She stopped walking. “Umm…yeah this is my house.”

The grey house sat fifteen feet back from the sidewalk. The cement walkway lead to the steps that raised to a perfectly inviting white door. The left corner of the house was all clear glass. The lot was completely covered with grass, tall shrubs lined the property on the left, while a tree bent over the sidewalk on the right. As we walked towards the house she looked at me warily. “I usually go in the back.” I gestured with my hand “lead the way.”

We walked on a cobble stone path around the back of the house. The driveway lead to the garage that was attached to the left side of the house. We climbed a few step to the patio, then a few more to the back porch.

She entered the code into the door and we stepped into the kitchen. “Umm... Can I get you something to drink? I think I have lemonade and I know there is some bottled water.”

“I’ll have water.” She went to the refrigerator pulling out two bottles. “Can you give me a minute? I just want to go to the bathroom, and I have to feed Seth.”

“Sure we have a few minutes” She started walking towards the other room “Edward make yourself at home, I’ll be right back.”

“Thanks Bella” she stopped and looked at me like she was confused. She blinked a few times, and then started walking again. “Bella, don’t forget your swimming suit” I called out after her.

“Are you serious?” she asked incredulously. I laughed “If you don’t take one, Alice will give you one.” I was looking around the small kitchen; the walls were painted soft beige. The stainless steel Refrigerator and stove were on the left, with the microwave secured to the wall above it. On the right, half the wall was a window with a small oval table and two high back black chairs. Directly in front of me sat the sink with another window above it and dishwasher nestled in between the bottom cabinets. On both sides of the window along the wall, cabinets filled the space.

There wasn’t much on the counters. The coffee pot sat in one corner in the other a decorative dish stood in a stand. I glanced on the table and picked up the book that was left there. Different Loving, I smirked - the girls been reading.

“Hey I grabbed a towel too.” She was back and had changed. She had on a pair of jeans and a blue silk sleeveless button down V neck shirt, which showed just a hint of cleavage. Her hair was out of the ponytail, hanging in soft waves down her back. “You look great.” Her face turned into that shade of pink “Thanks” she reached in the cabinet under the sink and pulled out a large plastic container setting it on the counter. Then she pulled out a double bowl dish - I assumed for Seth - she filled one side with water and the other with dry chunks from the plastic container, which she then returned back under the sink. She put the bowl down next to the wall and Seth was there in an instant. “I know you’re hungry” she said as she patted his head “You be a good boy, mommy will be back.” she looked at me “I’m ready when you are, my bag and purse are in the living room” she pointed into the other room.

I followed her; this room was painted the same color with white woodwork. The wall opposite of the windowed corner was brick with a fireplace nestled in it. The oak floor had an area rug in the center with a sofa and two chairs on each side, the square coffee table sat in the middle of the grouping.

“This is a nice house. You have a lot of windows, great sunlight. How long you lived here?” I couldn’t remember if she told me before. “I’m here four years. Yeah, I liked this house. I’d like to do something with the kitchen, but I don’t know what. I had the bathroom redone when I bought it.”
“Can I see it?”

“Sure come on.

She led the way down the hall. The doors to the rooms were open. “This is my room” She pointed to the room on the right. It was painted slightly darker beige, with white woodwork. The dark wood sleigh bed was under a row of windows, with a matching night stand on each side of it. The bedding was deep brown with a beige scroll design going through it. The only other piece of furniture in there was a dresser and a much filled bookshelf. Seth’s bed was in the corner by the closet.

“Can I ask why you don’t have window treatments?”

“Well, I like the light. But I do have treatments.” She walked over to the night stand picking up a remote, she pushed a button, and brown shades slowly descended down the window in between the panes of glass. “Do you have them on all your windows?” She nodded, walking back into the hall pointing to the room directly across from this one.

“This is my office-slash-workout-TV room. This is the room that is usually a mess” She looked inside ‘You’re lucky I wasn’t home last night, so it didn’t get messed up” I looked in and she was right. The far corner housed the computer. Three large bookshelves dominated the whole northern wall. The TV was angled in the other corner and an old plaid tweed love seat sat in front of it, with a chipped oval coffee table in between the two. There was a double tiered round end table on one side of the love seat, and a rectangle table with a light coming out of it on the other.

“Nice furniture Bella.”I said with a smirk. She looked at me, biting her bottom lip and shrugged. I walked over and sat on the love seat, stretching my arm over the pink, green and purple knitted blanket that was neatly folded over the back.

“It’s comfortable” I said with a smile. She walked over and sat down next to me.

“It was my mothers. When she died, my dad got rid of most of her stuff. But these pieces he brought back with us and they were in my bedroom. He wanted me to feel at home.” I put my arm around her “How old were you Bella?” She looked straight ahead blankly “eight” I pulled her to my chest ‘I’m sorry baby that must have been hard?” She nodded “Yeah, Charlie was great, and I told you, I spent a lot of time at La Push.”

I left her go, pulling her hands as I stood up. “Show me this bathroom, or we are going to be late and have to suffer the wrath of Alice.” She laughed and went back into the hall. The last door was the bathroom. She was right it was nice and there was an entrance leading into her room. White Wainscoting came half way up the wall. The modern sink sitting atop of the dark cherry base looked more like a piece of art, rather than something to spit your toothpaste in. The jet tub was surrounded by white ceramic tiles, with aqua tile placed chaotically throughout.

‘Alright, I see why you spent an hour in the tub last night.” She giggled. ‘I like to sit in the tub, I find it very relaxing. I missed laying in a bubble bath, so when I bought this house, before I moved in; I made sure I got what I wanted.”

“You didn’t have a tub before?” who doesn’t have a tub. She shook her head. “I didn’t have a tub until I moved here.” I narrowed my eyes “why not?”

“Well, I lived in the dorms at college; you know what that’s like? Before that we only had a shower. I mean, there was a tub there, but, well....it got broken.” Her voice trailed off as she walked towards the living room.

“Why didn’t you get it fixed?” I asked as I picked up her purple duffle bag.

I followed her back into the kitchen, “Do you really want to hear this story?” She asked as she opened the back door, hitting a code into the security system. “Yes I do, my curiosity is peaked.” I said with a chuckle. She smirked and walked down the steps to the patio. She was going to go back to the front of the house but I grabbed a hold of her hand. “We can go out the back, I live that way” I said pointing my finger. As we walked she was quiet “So... your tub was broken?” I couldn’t figure out what was bad about her tub not working.

She sighed “I had class four days a week, and I worked part-time at the Wal-Mart because we needed the money. Anyway, one day I finished class for the day and went to my job, so by the time I got home it was after ten. James wasn’t home; I figured he had already eaten, because it was so late.” I was listening to her talk and something inside my head told me I didn’t want to hear the rest of the story.

“See when that happened in the past. He would eat at his parents. I was so tired, and I had homework and laundry to do, I just wanted to relax for fifteen minutes. I had just gotten into the tub” Yeah. I know I’m not going to like how this ends. “When I hear the door open, James is standing there and he wants to know what the Fuck I am doing sitting in the tub, when he hasn’t had dinner yet. I said I had just gotten home, and I thought he ate at his moms, like he did before. He started screaming about he wasn’t married to his fucken mom and it’s not her responsibility to feed him.- Oh, that’s Jake and Leah’s house” she pointed to a slate blue two story house with a white picket fence in front of it.

“They live really close to you, who bought first.”

“I did, they moved in right after they got married. They lived in an apartment up town. My dad was really happy when they move so close. So was I actually.” She grew quiet again. I figured I better get this over with. “So you were in the tub and he was mad.”

She let out a long breath “Yeah, he was mad, told me I couldn’t do anything right, that I was a horrible wife, and a spoiled brat. He said fucking me was like fucking a wet noodle. The next thing I knew he was standing over the tub and he says, you and your God Damn baths. You want to be a wet noodle? I’ll make you a fucken wet noodle. And he grabbed my hair pulling it really tight and shoved my head under the water.”

I looked at her, with rage filled eyes. Her eyes were blank. “What did you do?” I asked as we turned down my street. “I tried to get out, I pushed on his hand but I couldn’t move them. He pulled my head up, and I thought he was going to let me go, but he shoved me back under the water again. I was kicking and trying to push my legs so I could get up. I guess I splashed him or kicked him or something, because he punched me in the leg.”

I was seething, “What kind of fucken animal is he?” She looked at me squinting “Are you sure you want to hear the rest of this?” I raised my eyebrows in shock ‘Are you fucking telling me it gets worse?” She stilled her face. “It always got worse Edward.”

We had just gotten to my house and I was leading her up the driveway. Standing on the porch, I dug my keys out of my pocket, opening the door. “Bella, I’m going to get a glass of wine, do you want one?” She nodded “White or red?”

“White” I smiled at her, cupped her face with my hand lightly brushing my thumb over her chin as I looked into her eyes - eyes that have seen so much sadness and fear. “You got it babe.”

I turned around heading for the wine cooler. “So” I took a deep breath, I fucken hated even saying the words “He punched you in the leg”

She was quiet for a minute; I stopped pouring and looked at her “Bella baby, if you don’t want to tell me, it’s ok.” Her eyes welled up with tears and I could see her trying to fight them back. I set down the bottle and she started talking

“Yeah, I don’t know how long it went on; I was so exhausted even when he would lift my head up, I couldn’t catch a breath. All I could think of was Charlie and how I would never see him again. Then I saw my mom and I wanted to go to her. I don’t know how I got out of the water. But I was lying on the bathroom floor.” She closed her eyes and put her head down, shaking it slightly as she talked.

“I remember hearing him say Now Bitch, and he had my hair wrapped around his fingers” tears were starting to run gown her face. “He pulled me across the bathroom floor by my hair. I was trying to get my footing, but I.....I couldn’t. We were over by the toilet, and he smashed my head on the floor. I could feel him straddling my chest. I don’t know when he took his pants off, but he was trying to force me to suck on him, but I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t breathe. He smacked my face a few times, saying Open up Bitch. I don’t know how long it went on, and I’m pretty sure I passed out. Because I next thing I remember, I was laying on my stomach. When I went to stand up, I felt nauseous and I threw up”

I sat there staring at her in horror fill shock, as she sits with her eyes closed reliving this. She continued with her recounting “I used the sink to pull myself up, and that’s when I saw the blood running down the back of my legs.”

“That mother Fucker!”

She finally lifted her head, staring straight ahead. I held her hand while she took a few deep breaths. “I didn’t know what to do. So I sat on the toilet and tried to clean myself off, the blood was making more nauseous and his fluids, oh” she shuddered “just, repulsive.”

Bella blinked a few times, when she was calmer, she continued. “So, I cleaned up, and went in to go to bed. My jaw was sore and was swelling. My upper thigh was black and blue. My rectum hurt so badly, it was burning” She took a deep breath, and left it go in a long gust.

“Where was the animal?” I interrupted; she looked at me with lifeless tear filled eyes. “He wasn’t there; I don’t know where he went. In the morning, I was so stiff and my face was swollen and slightly black-n-blue that I couldn’t go to school. James came in to the bedroom and wanted to know why I was still in bed and not packing his lunch. I went to get out of bed and he pushed me back down. Lying on top of me, he stuck his finger in my ass and told me That was the best lay he ever had from me. I was just glad I was unconscious through it. When he left, I went to take a bath, and he had broken off the nozzle, and had a patch over the hole. So I couldn’t take anymore baths.”

I just looked at her while I handed her the wine glass. “Bella, how old were you?” She took a sip of the wine. “Eighteen.” I could feel my chest heaving as I fought back the anger “How much longer did you stay with him?”

Bella closed her eyes, biting her lower lip as the muscles in her face started twitching “We were only married three months when that happened” more tears were coming down her face. I reached out and pulled her body to me, wrapping her in a tight protective hug. I kissed the top of her hair “How long were married to him Bella?”

She sniffled “I left him a year later, but the divorce wasn’t final until July 2007. So we were married almost five years.” “But you were only really with him for a year and a half?” I wanted her to clarify for me. “So the last time you were with a man was seven years ago?” She stiffened and finished her wine. Mine was already gone. Listening to that story, I should have the whole damn bottle. “Edward” she took a deep breath

“He came after you, didn’t he Bella? That’s why you don’t want to go home. When was that Bella?”

She looked at me “The day he signed the papers.” she said blankly. “And the only reason he signed the papers was because of Jake and Sam. But that’s a whole other story”

She looked at me with a sad smile. “Your sister is going to be upset, if we’re late.” I looked at my watch .damn! Then back at Bella “Do you want to go use the bathroom to...freshen up?”

“Yes please.”

I stood and helped her to her feet; I put my hands on her cheeks, cupping her face gently, before kissing her forehead. “I hope they hurt him bad Bella, because after hearing just one of your stories. I want to hunt him down and kill him. I’m so sorry you had to go through that shit” I ran my hand through her soft shinny hair “Come on, we have to get moving.” I showed her the downstairs bathroom, got her a washcloth and towel and closing the door to give her privacy.

I couldn’t believe what she had lived through. How can a man brutalize a woman like that? I was putting the case of beer into the trunk of my car, when a thought occurred to me. I like to hit women, am I the same kind of animal as James? He fucken raped her anally, what kind of sick fuck does that, and then brags and humiliates her afterwards. Yes I like anal sex, but only if she is willing, and for fucks sake conscious. Not brutal that she bleeds from it.

I was standing back in the house now, “Mother Fucker!” I said out loud. I was halfway through my tirade when Bella stepped out of the bathroom. “Are you Ok?”

She asked with concern in her eyes. She lives through a fucken nightmare at the hands of someone who was supposed to love and cherish her, and she wants to know if I’m ok.

“I’m fine Bella. Sometimes I have a temper problem.” She looked at me slightly frightened. “Don’t be scared, I don’t want you to be afraid of me. I would never hurt you, ever. It’s just for some reason, I feel drawn to you, and very protective of you.” she stared at me, I sighed “Come on let’s get moving” I picked up her duffle bag up off the front porch

“Are you sure you want me to go. I could just go home, you don’t need to feel... obligated” I looked at her for a second, trying to judge what she meat. Didn’t she want to go? Did she think I didn’t want her to come? I believed it was the latter. “I don’t feel obligated; I would like you to come.” I said as I tucked her hair behind her ears

As I opened her car door, she glanced over at my chopper; there was a gleam in her eyes. My girl liked motorcycles. “Do you ride?” she asked with excitement.

“I do.” I answered shutting her door. Once I was on my side I threw her purple duffle bag into the back seat, and started the car. I glanced at her was still looking at the bike.

“Did you ever ride?” she looked at me so full of enthusiasm, it almost made me gitty. “Oh yeah, Jake built two of them from scrap, and we would go riding around the reservation all the time. Then Charlie found out, and he nearly had an aneurysm from screaming so loud. Leah and I were grounded for a month.” She said with a giggle

. “Charlie wanted Billy, Jakes dad, to sell them or just throw them out. But Billy was more understanding. Those bikes are still in Billy’s garage.” she chuckled

‘Do they still run?”

“I don’t think so. Jake could probably get them working again. But we had a great summer that year. That was the summer before I starting dating James. I spent every day down at First Beach. That was the first time I went cliff diving.” she said with a nod.

“Cliff diving?” I didn’t know if I liked the sound of that.

“Yeah, there is this cliff that jets out over the ocean.” I was turning on Alice’s street now “How high is this cliff?” I asked cautiously. She shrugged “I don’t know fifty, sixty feet.”

“What? You jumped off a cliff sixty feet in the air, into the ocean?” I was looking at her with shock. She just beamed at me “Oh Yeah, it’s exhilarating! You should try it!”

I reached in the back for her bag; slug it over my shoulder as I opened her door. “I have to get the beer out of the trunk” she nodded as she stood looking at the house. When I joined her again, she followed me. Alice was standing in the open doorway, tapping her foot.

“What took you so long, Edward?” narrowing her eyes as she took Bella’s arm. Bella started to say something, but I cut her off. “Hey sorry, we had to walk to Bella’s feed Seth. Walk to my house, and get here, we’re only fifteen minutes late.” She sighed, “There is room in the refrigerator for that case.” She said pointing to the beer as she steered Bella through the French doors that lead to the patio.

I stuck the beer in the fridge keeping a six pack out, as Jasper was coming in. “Edward get me one of them will ya?” I got out two, twisting mine open and handing the other one to him. He eyed me “You OK man, you look a little on edge.” I shook my head “I’m fine, just needed a cold beer, it’s been quite a day so far.”

He took a drink of his beer, picked up a tray of burgers and sausages “Well, it’s only going to get better, Emmet’s on a roll out there.” I groaned “I better get out there, run some interference for Bella.” Jasper laughed “Don’t worry, Alice, Rose and Esme already threaten him with bodily harm if he embarrasses her again.” He was still chuckling as we walked onto the patio.

Everyone was sitting around the long rectangular glass table. Bella was next to Rose and across from Alice. Vinny was sitting between mom and dad coloring at the end of the table. Vinny looked up “Hi Uncle Eddie!”

“Hey buddy what’s up?” I said as I rustled his hair when I passed him, clapping my dad on the shoulder. “Hey dad” he nodded “Son, glad you’re here, Alice was going to send out a search party.” he chuckled. I bent over to kiss my mom’s cheek. “Mom”

. “Hi sweetheart”

‘Ankel Addie” Mia squealed, lifting her arms up. I picked her up out of Emmet’s arms.

‘Hey Eddie, nice bag you got there. Purple is defiantly your color.” he laughed and I rolled my eyes. I put Bella’s bag over on the bench and sat down next to her.

I put my arm on her shoulder “What you drinking babe?” She looked at me “A Margareta” I nodded “Mia did you say hi to Bella?” I asked in her ear. She put her head in my shoulder and acted shy. Jasper announced that the meat was started, and Alice got up to get the other food. Mia jumped off my lap, and followed her.

“Edward, what happened at the door, Thursday night?” Emmet asked. Bella was talking to Rose, and I was glad she was so relaxed around my family. ‘Nothing Em, three girls wanted to get in, they didn’t have passes and no one to vouch for them, so I sent them on their way.” Emmet snorted. “Tyler said one was trying to put the moves on you.” I looked at Bella, she seemed like she was half listening ‘Nothing I was interested in.” I added. Bella gave me a sly smile. Jasper announced the food was ready, and Emmet was the first one there. My mother spoke

“So Bella, Carlisle tells me you work at the center.” Alice chimed in before I could say anything “She teaches psychology at UW too.” My father looked over, ‘I didn’t know that. I thought there are only two paid position at the center?” he looked confused. Bella nodded “Yes, the director and Dr Miller. Those are the only two paid. The rest are all volunteers”

Emmet and Jasper were just sitting down with their plates. “Do you want to get some food?” I asked softly by her ear. She shivered and nodded. Alice had a fruit salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, and chips out with the burgers and sausage sandwiches. I was starving, so I got a burger and a sausage.

We just sat back down, when Rose asked how old Bella was when she married. She put a piece of tomato on her burger “Umm...it was a week after my eighteenth birthday.”

“Holy Shit!” Emmet barked “Were you knocked up?”

Bella turned red, my mother admonished him for being rude and Vinny announced to the table that ‘Uncle Emmet just said shit!” Emmet grinned at Vinny, “Don’t say that word buddy, you say poop” but then he turned his attention back to Bella, waiting for an answer.

She smirked “No, I was not.” she said with conviction. I was giving Emmet an I’m-going-to-fucken -kill-you look, when my dad told him it was none of his business. Bella sighed “That’s ok, really, everyone thought that anyway. Leah made me take a test the night before the wedding to prove it to her.” She chuckled “then she did everything she could have to try to talk me out of it.”

Alice interrupted “I would have talked you out of it, hell I would have kid-napped you if I had to.” Alice took a sip of her drink.” I only met him once or twice, but I didn’t like him.” she shuddered.
My mom tried to correct her “that’s not nice, Alice, you didn’t even know him.”

“Mother, I’m telling you. Even you would have disliked him. He gave me the creeps.”

Bella was twirling her fork in her fingers, her eyes on her plate, chewing her bottom lip. I rubbed her back, to try to ease some of her discomfort. It seemed to work, her back wasn’t so rigid. But she still hadn’t looked up.

“Where are you from Bella?” my dad asked.

“What is this, ask Bella twenty-one question.” I asked slightly irritated. My father looked at me, with a raised eyebrow.

Bella answered “I was born in Forks. It’s in the Olympic peninsula.”

“By Port Angeles?” my mother asked.

“Yes, it’s a little more than an hour west of there.”

“You lived there your whole life?” Rose asked. Bella shook her head, chewing some food. After she swallowed she answered. “No, my parents divorced when I was three, I went with my mom to Phoenix. I came back home when I was eight.”

“Your mother came back?” my mom interjected. I shot her a look.

Bella shook her head “No, she was killed in a car accident with my step-father. They were traveling to his game; he was a minor league baseball player. They traveled a lot, and I was with my Grandmother. Charlie came down, packed up most of my stuff, and a few things that were my mother’s and brought me back here.”

She looked back down at her plate. My mother put her hand over her chest ‘I’m sorry dear, I didn’t mean to pry. That must have been hard for you, growing up without a mother?” I looked at her like no-shit. Bella shrugged ‘Thank you, but really it was a long time ago, and Charlie is ... he really is a great father.” My mother glanced at me, with an apology in her eyes.

I picked up Bella’s hand under the table rubbing my thumb over the back of it. She looked at me and smiled. “I have dessert, chocolate cream or apple pie.” Alice got up to go in the kitchen, Bella’s phone rang

“Excuse me” she said as she stood up behind me. I looked at my mother again she mouthed ‘Sorry’ - I nodded, she didn’t mean any harm, but I tried to warn her. Bella was talking softly. Jasper and Emmet were talking about some game. Rose went in to help Alice I assumed. Bella said something about not now Jake, she didn’t sound happy, and then she started talking in a language I never heard before. After a few minutes, Alice and Rose were back, and Bella was sitting back down. Alice refilled her drink, she declined pie. Saying she was stuffed, I don’t know how, she hardly ate anything. It was quiet for a few minutes. I leaned over to Bella and whispered “Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, it’s just; Jake wants me to go home next weekend”

‘What was that language you were talking Bella?” Rose asked, she must have heard it when she was returning to her seat.

“Oh” Bella blushed- that is so fucking cute “It’s native American....Quylette.”

“You know native American...that’s so cool. Say something.” Jasper insisted. Bella looked at him thoughtfully, then spoke in a hauntingly beautiful native tongue.

“What does that mean?” Alice asked with interest.

“Basically, it’s a blessing, asking for peace, long life and prosperity to all who are gathered here.” I leaned over and whispered in her ear “Would you like me to change the subject?”

“Please” I rubbed her knee, I couldn’t help it, I really liked when she said please.

“Alice what have you been working on?”

She clapped her hands once loudly “Oh my god! I almost forget. Bella the other night when I came home I got this great idea for a design for you.”

‘For me?”

“Yes...listen. Ok so, I drew it out. I think I’m pretty close on your measurement, but I’ll have to get precise numbers before I start.” She was talking so fast, Bella just sat there staring at her across the table.
“What’s the basic design Alice?” Rose asked. Alice held up her hands and made an hour glass shape. “The basic piece is a hobbler dress. Then I got the idea to put the accessory pieces towards it. So all in all right now I have six pieces to the set.” She looked at Bella ‘You’ll be able to interchange the pieces and come up with numerous possibilities. Bella... Let me tell you what...you wear this piece and I guarantee everyone... will not be able to take their eyes off you.”

Bella’s voice was speculative. “Where am I going to wear it to?”

Rose chimed in “Party’s, Munch’s the club...you’re going to need something to wear girl.” Bella looked at me with wide eyes. Alice added “Edward tell her.” I smiled gently “You’re going to need something.” She pinched her bottom lip between her teeth, nodding.

“Come on, I have to put Mia in for a nap, I’ll show you what I came up with. Rose come see what you think, you’ll be able to see the vision.”

Bella looked at me, I just shrugged “No harm in looking” she sighed. Alice called Vinny “Come on sweetie, quiet time for a little bit” Bella was still sitting there “Come on Bella...I want to get your measurements”

Bella looked at Rose “Can anybody ever tell her no?” Rose laughed pulling her hand. “We don’t even try.”

“Mom are you coming? Oh and bring your suit Bella” Alice called out. My mother took Vinny’s hand. “Is this going to make me blush?’ Alice winked at our mother “Absolutely” As they were walking through the door, my father called out. “If it gets to be to much dear, close your eyes.” My mother looked at him and giggled.

Once the women were gone, we started cleaning up the leftover food. I stacked the dishes, and took them into kitchen. After scrapping them off, I loaded the dishwasher. Then I headed out to my car to get my suit and towel out of my gym bag in the trunk. I got a new beer and went out to join the men standing by the bar.

“So...Edward” Emmet began “What’s up with you and little Bella?”

I took a sip of my beer and smiled. “I don’t know, there is just something about her. She sweet, sassy and…” before I could say anything, Emmet said “sexy as hell”

I glared at him, I had this feeling in my chest. When I talked it came out like a growl “Don’t fucken talk about her like that!” My father glared at me. Emmet held up his hands “Chill out dude, I was just kidding.” Jasper eyed me. “What?” He shook his head “Nothing” and he went back to cleaning the grill. I took another swig of my beer “I’m going to put my suit on”

When I came back, Emmet and Jasper had their shirts off, and my mom had rejoined them. My father was holding a large white garment bag “You made it out alive mom, no blushing?”

“Just a little bit, I figured I would give them some privacy. When I left they were taking Bella’s measurements” I raised an eye at her, why would she have to leave for that. “I didn’t think Bella would be comfortable being naked in front of me...Not yet anyway” she added with a giggle.

I looked up at the window I knew she was behind...a naked Bella “Yooo..Superman…you can’t see through the brick.” Everyone snickered at Emmet’s comment. My father chuckled again “You ready to go dear? I want to get home and finish up that paper work.” My mother kissed Emmet and Jasper, when she kissed me she patted my cheek. ‘I like her, she’s good for you.”

“I like her too.”

We opened the hot tub, and climbed in with our drinks in hand. Jasper pressed the button on the side, and the Mariners’ game came on the TV.. “So can we seriously talk about Bella, or are you going to throw another hissy fit?” Emmet inquired. Jasper smirked.

“I didn’t throw a hissy fit. Just don’t talk about her like she’s some whore at the club, who you scene with and never speak to again.” He looked at Jasper “Six months” they shook hands “You’re on.”

“What the fuck are you ass wipes talking about?” they shook their heads “Nothing, friendly bet amongst brothers.” Jasper replied.

Emmet got serious “What’s the story with her and her ex?”

“I don’t know the whole story yet Em, but it’s not good” He got an angry look on his face “Like what happened to Rosey?” I nodded “Close, but this went on for years. Even after she left he tracked her down, fucken abused her. You know that Jacob guy from the other night?” they acknowledged “I guess he went after him, kicked his ass that time. But she’s still afraid, and that’s why she doesn’t want to go back to Forks, I’m guessing he still lives there. You should see the security system she has on the house. I swear it’s better than fucken Fort Knox.”

“What’s the asshole’s name?”

“James”

“James what?”

I shrugged “Cummings” Jasper replied.

“How do you know that?” Did Jasper know him?

“Alice told me, she said Bella’s name was Cummings when they were in college.”

The French doors opened and the girls came out talking. Bella looked a whole lot more relaxed then she did when she went in. They stopped behind the bar to refill their drinks, they were laughing about something. As they walked over to us, Bella removed the towel she had hanging over her arm in front of her body. She had on a black strapless top that stopped two inches below her bust, and a short black ruffled skirt. Her hair was loose with a few wayward strands blowing from the light breeze. She was beautiful. Jasper was talking to me, but I wasn’t listening. I was busy watching Bella from the corner of my eye as she slipped off her shoes. What she did next, made my dick feel like it was going to explode.

Holding on to both sides of her skirt, she slid it down over the front of her thighs. The matching bottom she had on barely came above her pubic bone. Showing off a tone, trim stomach between the two pieces. Then she turned around, and bent over to remove the skirt. My mouth was gaping open and I groaned at the sight of her long toned legs that led to her firm round ass. Rose leaned over and whispered something to her, she shook her head, and giggled a little, and then Rose swatted her bottom. What the fuck is that about! They see her naked before me, and Rose gets to swat her bottom first too.

I just stared at them. Because that shit aint right! Bella stood and looked at me with a smile before returning her attention back to the girls. When she stood back up the top of her suit was an open corset style with interlacing ties in between her shoulder blades. She tucked her thumbs into the back of her bottoms and adjusted it so it fit snugly against the contours of her hips.

Alice handed her the drink, and they walked over to us. I tried to act coy, by listening more closely to Em and Jaz, but I watched her walk from the corner of my eye. When they got to the edge of the tub, Rose held her hand out, so Em could help steady her. She didn’t submerge herself in the water, sitting on the edge instead. Alice handed Jaz her glass and got in. Bella just stood on the side looking out over the back yard. “Are you coming in?”

She smiled at me “Yes Sir, I am” Fuck my dick twitched, and then she pulled a hair band off her wrist. She stretched her arms up into her hair, causing her back to arch, and her breast to push out in front of my face. I suppressed a moan, but my breathing had already picked up, and between the blood leaving my brain and heading to my dick, and the heat of the water. I was feeling a little light headed.

I stood up taking another swig of beer, wiping the cold bottle across my head. “You hot there little brother?” Emmet said with a snicker. Rose giggled “You do look a little warm Edward.”

I took Bella’s hand to help her in the water, glaring at Em and Rose from behind her back. Bella sat next to Alice taking a drink of her Margareta.

“It’s not that hot Edward. I’ve been a whole lot hotter.” I looked at her blankly. She and Alice giggled. It was then I knew Isabella Swan was going to be the death of me.

Chapter 3

BPOV

As I watched Edward shut the door, I was sure my face was giving away my excitement.

All night long, I kept watching him. The way his muscles flexed under his shirt as he moved his arms. How his Adams apple bobbed when he would take a drink, and then his tongue would sneak out to lick his lips.

Every time he did that my girlie parts would go into over drive making me afraid to get up, knowing for sure there would be a wet spot on my chair. The best view was when he would walk away, his pants pulled across his gluts so deliciously that I had to suppress the urge to groan. But his eyes, oh-my-god, his green eyes. I could get lost, just staring into their beauty. He was sex-on-a-stick.

I didn’t know what to say when Aro suggested that I come to the club with Edward. Inside I was screaming...Yes! Yes! Yes! But I didn’t want him to feel like I was being pushed on to him.

Besides why in the world he would want to be with me, when he could have any woman he wanted was beyond me. I know I’m not ugly, but I’m not beautiful either. I’m simple, plain and let’s face it, with the shit I been through with James, I come with a lot of baggage. Which I’m sure once he knows all of it, he wouldn’t want to bother with me.

Yeah, Edward Cullen was out of my league. Besides, I’m was sure he is used to women who are a lot more adventurous in their sexual habits then I was. After all, I was only ever with one man--my husband. Even then, we didn’t have a very good sex life. He was rough, and not in the loving dominating way I fantasize about. No, he was brutal, mean, and uncaring. There was never any loving words or caresses, just pure brute force.

The first time we had sex it was after the junior prom. He was a senior and I had scamed my dad into allowing me to stay over for an after party. He reluctantly allowed it because Jake and Leah would be there along with parental chaperones that were to be there all night. In reality there were no parents and I knew Jake and Leah would never tell, that was our bond.

I wore a pink organza dress; I bought it myself with the money I had made working at the grocery store on weekends. It was pretty, with spaghetti straps and an empire waist; the bottom flowed when I twirled around. I only ever wore it once; the next day I had to throw it away. The next day was cold and I was glad for that because no one thought it strange that I was wearing a turrle neck that hid the bruises on my arms and neck.

“So are you going to?” Jake’s voice shook me out of my memory.

“What?”

He rolled his eyes at me. “I saw him with his phone; did you give him your number? Are you going to go out with him?”

“He said something about going out for coffee,” I answered with a shrug.

“Yeah right, coffee. He just wants to put a little cream in ya, that’s all he’s interested in.” Jake was quiet. “I don’t like him.”

I looked over at Jake, “Why not?” I asked incredulously.

“I don’t know, I don’t like the way he looks at you. It’s like he is coming up with all sorts of strange things in his mind to do to you.”

I was mad for a second, but then I smiled, “Really?”

Jake was pulling into my driveway; he put the car in park before turning to look at me. “Look Bella, I’m a man.”

“You are?” I asked with mock shock and then giggled.

“I’m serious. I went with you tonight to keep an eye on you, and make sure no one tried to do anything weird to you. That guy…”

I cut him off, “Edward.”

He sighed heavily, “Ok, Edward, Bella....He wants you!”

I didn’t know how to reply to that. So I just sat there with a big smug smile plastered on my face. After a few seconds I grabbed my purse, “Thanks for taking me Jake, love you.” I kissed his cheek and opened the door, stepping onto the driveway.

“Bella!”

I sighed leaning in the door of the car. “It’s just coffee Jake. I swear I won’t fuck him on the table at Starbucks.” Closing the door before his shocked face could reply.

The security light was already on, punching in the code for the keyless lock, Seth was right inside waiting for me. I checked the security system to make sure all was clear, then flicked the outside light so Jake knew I was safe inside.

I didn’t have to worry about taking Seth out, he used his doggy door. It was laser protected. He had a chip inserted under his skin that allowed him to pass through. If anyone or anything else came through the opening, the alarm would sound. I thought it was over kill until I saw an episode of The First 48 Hours, where a family was murdered by a man coming in through the doggy door. Besides Seth didn’t even care about the chip and he could come and go as he needed to.

“Come on boy, let’s go to bed.” I checked the security one more time, turned off the lights and headed to my room down the hall. My room is in the front of the house, with the master bath attached to it. It was my one luxury when I bought this house. I looked longingly at my Jacuzzi tub, I was just too tired. I went through my normal nightly ritual. Once I was changed and washed, I brushed my teeth and hair and plugged my phone into the charger on the night stand before climbing into bed.

I was just about to turn out the light when my phone chirped with a text message. I wasn’t going to answer, sure that it was Jake. I didn’t have the energy to listen to him anymore tonight. But, I knew that if I didn’t he would be worried and would probably come over here with Leah to check on me. Leah needed her rest, so I sighed and picked up my phone.

Just making sure you made it home safely Isabella - E
OH SHIT! I was hyperventilating. He was checking on me. I replied immediately.

Yes, I am home safe and sound in my jammies already nice and snuggly – B

I was literally giddy. Seth looked at me like I was crazy. I jumped when my phone chirped again.

Good, nothing like snuggly jammies to bring you pleasant dreams.
Sleep well, Isabella - E

You have a good night yourself Edward - B

I figured that was the end of the texting. I put down my phone, looked at Seth sleeping in his bed and turned out the light. The clock was blinking 2:05.

I awoke the next morning with a groan; I was having the most wonderful dream. I was at peace lying in a field of green grass, surrounded by wild flowers, wrapped in strong warm arms.
I looked at the clock -7:05-, damn. I was so comfortable, the last thing I wanted to do was get out of bed, but the smell of the coffee pot was to alluring.

“Come on Seth, let’s get moving.”

I rolled out of bed venturing into the kitchen to grab my first cup of coffee, before getting in the shower. I’m not big on makeup or hair styles, so I pulled my hair back in a low pony tail, used some face powder and mascara. I dressed in jeans, and a cute blue peasant shirt, with a pair of black flats. By 8:10 I was filling my travel mug, checking the security system and heading out the door.

I stopped by the Superfresh to pick up a few things that the center was always in need of: Diapers, formula, juices, baby food, toilet paper, tampons, shampoo and body wash. Two Hundred and seventy-five dollars later I was heading to the center.

“Good morning Carol,” I called out. Carol is the director. She’s in her early thirty’s and has a round face. She’s not fat, but she’s not thin either; I guess she is what you would call voluptuous.

“Anything new?” I asked with curiosity.

“Sally is back, she came in last night; her and the kids. She is bruised all over her left cheek. She refuses to see the doctor; she says he was rude to her before. She wants to see you; I penciled her in for you at 10:00.”

Nodding, I sighed.

Dr. Miller was a very competent physician, but his compassion and understanding of dealing with battered women was lacking. He was of the mind that if they are stupid enough to stay then they deserve what they get. I wish we had someone else, Dr. Miller didn’t work here for free, and sometimes it was hard enough to make all the bills each month.

Many times the volunteers and staff would pitch in from their own pockets just to keep the lights on. All the money I got from the divorce, I put into a trust, and I use that for the center. I figured its James’ penance.

I went into the community room; Sally was sitting feeding her daughter, her son next to her. Walking up to her I could see the mark on her arm, and her left eye was black and blue.

“When you are done here, I’ll be at my desk, come and see me, ok?”

She looked at me, nodding. I patted little Joey’s head and went to say hi to some of the other women in the room. Walking back to my desk, it was covered with mail. I was in on Wednesday night, but I hadn’t had time to go through it all. I was just sitting down with a fresh cup of coffee, when my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID - Jake.

“Hey,” I answered.

“Bella I just wanted to apologize for last night.”

I shrugged, “It’s OK.”

“No, I was wrong,” he said dejected.

“Leah made you call me, didn’t she?” I said with a grin.

“Well, sort of,” I could hear Leah in the back ground saying something about not being my father, Jake huffed, “really, I am sorry.”

“That’s ok Jake, I forgive you.” There was a knock at the door, Sally was standing there with Nicole in her arms and Joey hanging on her leg. I smiled, waving her in.

“I have to go Jake, tell Leah to call me later or tomorrow.”

“OK, bye Bells.” I switched my phone to silent, so we wouldn’t be interrupted.

Almost two hours, a half a box of Kleenex and six broken crayons later, Sally was walking out of my office. This is the third time that she has left him. I put my head down on my desk, rubbing the back of my neck, trying to ease the tension headache. Checking my phone there was a message from a number I didn’t recognize.

Logging into the voice mail I heard, “Good Morning, Ms. Swan.” It was Aro. “Just so you know, I am putting that check in the mail this morning. I’m sure it will be put to good use. Have a good day, my dear.” I smiled; Aro has been a main contributor to the center since I met him. I walked over to Carol to tell her to be expecting the check and to let me know so that I can send him a thank you card. While I was in her office I grabbed the agenda from her desk to make sure I had everything in my calendar.

“How about we break loose, grab some lunch, and have a Watermelon Martini?” Carol asked.

“Watermelon Martini? You think that’s a good idea?”

She smirked, “Always the responsible one. Ok, we’ll save that for after work.”

I nodded, “Deal! Let’s go get some lunch.”

We spent the time talking about the upcoming walk-a-thon, the charity ball, and looking for a physician that would be willing to work for free. Once we were back at the center I had two more appointments, and I had to go and check out an employment placement. By the time I got back to the center it was 6:00, and I was ready for that drink.

Carol looked at me, “How did it go?”

“I’ll tell you over that Martini.”

She turned off the computer, “Let's go, I could use one myself.”

We walked two blocks to a pub, ordered wraps, fries and our Martini’s, because they are so good. I told her about the job prospect for one of the women in the center. She told me she got a call from a doctor that might be available to donate time. The day turned out fairly well, a donation from Aro, and hopefully a new doctor. By the time we were half way through with the second drink she asked what my plans were for the weekend. I mentioned that I met Edward at a club last night -of course I didn’t tell her what club- I did tell her about our upcoming coffee date, and explained my sex-on-a-stick theory.

Her eyes lit up and with a smirk asked, “Sex-on-a-stick, huh? You think he could make me leave my husband?”

“I think he could!” I said with a giggle.

“He probably has a little peen.”

“No! Why would you say that?” I asked with astonishment.

“Was he ever married?”

“I don’t know,” I shrugged.

“Does he have gay tendencies?”

I burst out laughing. “I don’t think so!”

Carol shrugged and started laughing, “Well there you have it girl. If he wasn’t married, and he’s not gay, then he has to have a tiny peen, or he would have been scooped up already.” She said as she slammed her hands down on the table laughing.

I sat back in the booth, laughing so hard, I couldn’t see through the tears. “That is some theory you have there.”

I was becoming aware that due to our silly banter people were looking at us. As we were composing ourselves, I saw a figure approach our table from the corner of my eye. Out of reflex I went on the defense, and then I heard that velvet voice, “Isabella?”

I melted.

Looking up, there was Edward.

I smiled, “Edward? Hi.”

I went to introduce Carol and she was staring at him, I think she had drool on the corner of her mouth. Yeah, talk about his little peen now, bitch. Although he did look mouth watering with his kakis pants and dark brown button down over a white t-shirt.

“Umm, Carol this is Edward, Edward, Carol.”

He smiled at her extending his hand, “Nice to meet you, Carol.”

She just stared; I kicked her softly under the table. “Oh yeah, nice to meet you too, Edward.” She looked at me and mouthed ‘Damn.’

“So Isabella, are you out for a night on the town?”

I sighed, ‘No, we were just leaving work and it’s been a long week, so we came for dinner and a drink. That’s all. You?” Please don’t tell me you’re on a date...

“Actually, I’m meeting my father. I rarely come to this part of town, but my father wanted to check something out and he was told that this place has great Rubens. So, here I am.”

I nodded.

He crinkled his eyes, “You have another job? You work around here?”

Sighing I answered, “Ummm, it’s part of that long story, and yes it’s just a few blocks away.”

Edward nodded, “And one day Isabella, I will hear this long story right?”

I didn’t get to answer him because a man came to stand next to him, “Edward,” he clapped him on the shoulder.

Edward turned around, “Hey dad, you here already?”

I couldn’t take my eyes off him; his father was drop dead gorgeous. He was a tall as Edward with a slightly larger build, blue eyes and blond hair, he had to be in his fifties, but he looked more like thirty-five. I forced myself to look at Carol; she had the same blank expression I’m sure I had.

“Dad, this is Isabella, we met last night, and her co-worker Carol. Ladies, this is my father Dr. Carlisle Cullen.”

He extended his hand and I shook it, “Nice to meet you,” when he turneed to Carol she was standing, “Actually Dr. Cullen I believe we talked on the phone earlier today, I’m Carol Beemer.”

Dr Cullen tilted his head to the side, “From the center?”

“Yes,” Carol nodded.

He shook her hand. “Actually I stopped by the center; I was going to see if I could have a look at the facilities. I should have called first; I didn’t realize that the office would be closed.”

I looked to Edward seeing he had a look of confusion.

Dr Cullen went on to say, “I spoke with my brother-in-law this afternoon; he had nothing but positive remarkes. He informed me that you use community resources to train and educate the women you help. That your staff is mostly made up of volunteers, and that there are only two paid positions. He also said that he himself has donated on a regular basis for years, mostly due in part to a very tenacious member of your staff... I asked him for a name, but he said that was confidential. He was worried that he might be putting the young lady in harm’s way. So, I don’t know who she is, but she must be exceptional.”

Carol shook her head, “I’m sorry Dr Cullen, who is your brother-in-law?”

“Aro Vulturi,” he said with confidence.

Carol looked at me and beamed. I rolled my eyes as my face grew hot from the blush.

“That would be Bella,” she motioned in my direction. “She has been squeaking donations from Aro, for three years now.”

I was still sitting, trying to stop the blushing. I could feel Edward watching me as he listened.

Dr Cullen looked at me, “Well, you must be some negotiator to squeak money from him.”

I shook my head and smirked, “I just wink a lot.”

Dr. Cullen laughed, “Yeah, that would do it.”

“Dr. Cullen, if you would like to see the facility we could go now. My car is back there and I have some files I need to pick up. It’s only a few blocks.”

He nodded, “Edward, do you mind? I’ll only be a half an hour and then we can have dinner.”

Edward shook his head, “No, go ahead. If Isabella doesn’t mind me sitting with her?” He said with a smile.

“Oh, I’ll suffer through for the center,” I said mockingly.

He chuckled, and sat down across from me where Carol had been.

“Let me give you money for the bill, Bella.” Carol was reaching in her purse,
“I got it.” I waved her off.

“I’ll treat next time,” she said as she reached over to hug me. “Listen, if I don’t talk to you over the weekend, I’ll see you Monday afternoon.”

“Absolutely,” I hugged her back. I grabbed her hand as she was ready to turn around, “Carol, while your there, would you look in on Sally? I’m pretty sure her nose is broken.”

“I will. You be safe girl.”

I watched them walk out; I got a sick feeling of worry in my stomach, and pulled my bottom lip in between my teeth.

“What’s the matter?”

I turned to look at Edward; he was eyeing me with concern.

“What?” I forced a smile.

He narrowed his eyes at me, “You look worried? I like it better when you smile.”

“I’m fine.” I shook my head.

“Is this part of the long story?” He asked, eyeing me even more.

“Yeah, it is.” I smiled.

“There see? Much better when you smile.” He leaned forward, “I’ll tell you what Isabella, when you’re ready, and you trust me, I’ll listen to your story. And if we are to be anything, you’re going to have to trust me.”

The waiter came over to the table to see if we needed anything, “Isabella, do you want anything else?”

“Ah, yeah,” I looked at the waiter. “Can I get a piece of Chocolate cheese cake with cherries on top, and a coffee please? Oh, and can I have a pastrami on wheat, dry, to go?” The waiter wrote it down then looked to Edward, who was eyeing me suspiciously.

He chuckled shaking his head, “I’ll have a tonic with lemon.”

The waiter nodded and left. I regarded Edward’s expression, “What?”

He was still shaking his head. “Are you going to eat all that?’

“Well, chocolate is a girl’s best friend, and the sandwich is for Seth.”

“Seth? Is your son?”

“My dog,” I shook my head.

He looked.... relieved. “You feed your dog pastrami?”

“Sometimes, as a treat.”

He leaned closer over the table, “What would be a treat for you Isabella?”

Holy hell! Is it hot in here?

“Umm... I told you chocolate. It’s my one indulgence. Every now and then, when I been a good girl, I treat myself”

He shook his head, “Doesn’t anyone ever treat you?”

“No,” I said looking down at the table.

Edward cupped my chin lifting it, “What the fuck did he do to you Isabella?”

I could feel the tears forming in my eyes. “He made me doubt everything.”

Edward wiped the tear from the corner of my eye. “You know when I look at you, I see a strong, intelligent, curious woman. Who seems so unsure of herself, when in all actuality she is as fierce as a lion.”

I snorted, “I’m not a lion, I’m afraid of my own shadow. I have so many doubts and questions about who I am, and what I need, that sometimes I don’t even recognize myself. It’s like I put on this front, but it’s not me. Like there is something more hiding deep inside of me, screaming to get out and until it comes out, I’m only half a person.”

He was looking in my eyes, like he was reading my soul.

The waiter came, and I realized we were leaning towards each other across the table, so I sat back to let him put the plate and cup in front of me. When the waiter left, I picked up my fork and sighed, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to dump all that on you.”

Edward smiled warmly, “Its ok, Isabella. We all felt that way. I told you, it’s all about trust. I’m glad you trusted me enough to share.”

I took a bite of the cheese cake, it really was heavenly.

“Do you want some of this?” I asked as I pushed it towards the middle of the table.

Edward picked up the extra fork that the waiter brought, “I thought you’d never ask.” He took a bite, “Mmmm, that is really good.”

“So,” I asked to break some tension, “How did you end up teaching at UW?”

He took another bite and a swallow of his drink. “Well...I went into pre-med; I really wanted to be a pediatrician.”

I was shocked. “Really?”

He nodded, “Yup, but I didn’t get into a residency program; my dad was going to pull some strings, but I didn’t want any special treatment. So I applied for the position to teach Anatomy, I found I like it. So...here I am. I get off weekends, holidays, no emergency calls in the middle of the night…” I laughed. “Hey, I was the child of a doctor, I know what kind of hours they work.”

I nodded, “Yeah, I guess you’re right. My dad is a cop, same thing happens. Weekends, holidays, accidents at two in the morning, I think until I was thirteen I spent more time at Sue’s house then I did at my own. Charlie would come in…”

“Charlie?”

“Ummm...my dad.” He nodded, so I continued. “Anyway he would come in, pick me up wrapped in a blanket and take me to Sue’s house.” I saw him looking at me questionably. “Sue is Leah’s mother.” I gestured with my hands, “Leah is Jacob’s wife.”

“You all grew up together?” he asked.

“Yes, we have been best friends since I was eight, now Charlie is married to Sue, so we’re sisters. Jake is just along for the ride.” I said with a snort as he laughed.

The waiter was back with my sandwich, “Will there be anything else?”

Edward looked at me and I shook my head, “No I think that will be all, just the check.”

He pulled out the little black bill fold and set it on the table. I went to grab it, but Edward was faster. He was reaching into his wallet.

“Edward, I’ll pay for it.”

“I got it Isabella,” he shook his head.

“But you didn’t even order anything.” I was kind of pissed.

“Yes I did, I had a drink and ate most of that dessert.”

“Edward,” I whined, yes I whined.

He laughed, “Humor me Isabella, please?”

How could I refuse when he asked so nicely, and it was already done?

Edward reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, it must have been on silent, because I didn’t hear it. He gestured to it, “Excuse me, while I answer this?”

I nodded.

“Hi dad....no that’s alright, I’m just chatting with Isabella, and sharing her cheesecake.” He looked at me, “Where is your car?”

“Um...back at the center?”

He nodded once, keeping his eyes on mine, “Dad, I’m going to walk Isabella to her car. I’ll call you when I get there and then we can come back here,.... yeah, sure...” He handed me the phone.

I took it from him like it was a snake about to bite me.

“Hello?” It came out sounding like a question.

“Hello Bella, this is Carlisle, I just wanted you to know, that I looked at Sally. Her nose is broken,” I closed my eyes. “There is really nothing to do for it.”

“I know.” I interrupted. There really is nothing to do. Just hope it heals without too much deformity, and take pain meds.

Carlisle continued, “I taped it, and put a cold pack on it. I also gave her some Ibuprofen for the swelling and pain. Her cheek bone is intact, and there does not seem to be any damage to her orbital bone. As long as she does not have any problems breathing, that is about all I can do for her.”

“Thank you Dr. Cullen.”

“Please call me Carlisle. I think we will be seeing a lot of each other Bella.”

I sighed, “Thank you again Carlisle. Here’s Edward.” I handed him back the phone.

“Dad? You still there?...Sounds good, I’ll call you from outside. Bye.” He closed his phone, “You ready to go home?”

I nodded, “I’m ready to leave.”

Chapter 4

BPOV

We left the pub and began walking slowly down the street. The sun was starting to set and even though it was the beginning of May, there was a chill in the air. Reflexively I shivered.

“You cold?”

“Just a little, it’s not far, I’ll survive.”

He put his arm around my shoulder, providing warm friction with the movement of his hand on my arm. I looked into his face, meeting his eyes, he grinned “What kind of a gentleman would I be, if I allowed you to get sick?”

“Are you a gentleman?”

“Most definitely am, my mother instilled into us boys the virtue of treating a woman with respect and courtesy.”

“How does that figure in with the whole...club life thingy?”

He chuckled. “Club life thingy?” he asked mockingly. “Are we going to talk about that now?” His eyes grew a little darker, I shrugged, and he shook his head “How much further do we have to go?”

“It’s at the end of the next block.”

“Then I’m afraid that conversation will have to wait for a later time.”

We were quiet for few steps, his arm wrapped protectively around me. With each step I could smell his skin, not like cologne; just man, raw, sweet, and sensual.

“Can I ask you something Isabella?”

“Sure.”

“How many men have you been with?”

Wooo… Was not expecting that.

“Umm,” I could feel my face heat up. “..Yeah... um, one”

He stopped walking. “One! Just one?”

I nodded my head, “Yeah, one, just James. That’s all.”

He looked at me like I had birds flying out of my ears. “Isabella, when was the last time you were with a man?”

I looked around the street, very aware that there were people who could hear us.

“Willingly?”

His eye brows narrowed, “What do you mean willingly? Fuck Isabella, did he hurt you? Did he force himself on you? What kind of an animal is he?”

I couldn’t stop the tears from falling. I hated being weak, so I yelled, “I couldn’t fuck stop him! I tried, he wouldn’t stop! What the fuck was I suppose to do? I didn’t want him to, but he wouldn’t stop!” By the end of my tirade, tears were pouring down my face. I was shaking as Edward pulled me to his chest, wrapping his arms around me, and holding me close.

When I finally settled down I could hear myself repeating over and over, “It’s not my fault. It’s not my fault.”

Edward was brushing his hand down the length of my pony tail, whispering soothingly, “Of course it’s not your fault.”

I relaxed into the warmth of his chest, slowly coming back to reality. I tisked at my own stupidity.

Taking a few deep breaths, I shook my head keeping my eyes closed, “Edward, really. What do you want with me? I have so much shit in my past. You...you, don’t want me.” Putting my hands on his chest I tried to remember the feel, it’s been so long since I felt so safe and protected, I didn’t want to forget what it felt like, and then I pulled away.

Edward grasped my hands, “Isabella, look at me.”

I took another deep breath and looked into his eyes.

“We all have shit we have to work through. Some of us just have a little more than others. I can’t tell you that I can make you all better, or that you will forget. But I can tell you, that embracing who you are, and letting all the other shit go, will allow you to live a fulfilled life. Giving yourself over to someone else is part of the healing process. Remember I said you’re going to have to trust me?”

I nodded.

“Baby, I’m going to have to hear all your shit. I need to know, because I need to be able to know what’s ok and what’s not. I need to know how far to push you without causing damage either physically or emotionally and I don’t ever want to hurt you. You are going to have to trust me with everything you have in you. It’s a process. We start out slow, when I can trust you and you can trust me, without any doubt…” He smiled, “…Baby, that’s when we made it to the top. But it’s a long way up there. There’s going to be lots of tears and letting go.” He took a deep breath, glanced around the street then looked back into my eyes. “My question for you is, do you want to climb up that ladder with me?”

What is he asking me? I kept looking at him searching for an answer in his eyes.

“Why?” Was the only thing I could ask.

“Do you feel that?” His face grew gentle squeezing my hands a little tighter.

“Yes,” I nodded.

“What does it feel like?”

“It’s a tingle, like a small current.” I answered, looking at our hands.

“Exactly! I have never felt that before, ever. I don’t know Isabella, but I think fate has stepped into our lives to bring us together. I’m offering you my knowledge to help you explore who you are in here.” He touched my chest right over my heart. “You said you have something screaming inside you wanting to get out. So let me help you.”

I still wasn’t sure what he wanted from me.

“Look I’m not asking you to strip naked and kneel at me feet, at least not at this minute.” I chuckled, he smiled “Let’s go slow, we’ll talk more about this Sunday. You think about it. I have rules, and hard limits that I don’t cross. I can be warm and generous, but also strict and forceful. It’s all a matter of trust, Love.”

I didn’t miss the ‘love’ part, and inside I was smiling to beat the band, on the outside I was scared.

“Come on, my father is probably wondering where I am.” I nodded, and we continued on in silence.

When we came to the front door of the center, I opened the latch to the gate for the breeze way that ran alongside the building.

“We have to go in the back. My car is back there, and no one goes in the front.” He followed behind me. Once we were through and at the back of the building I punched the code into the steel door, walking through into the open court yard.

“Security?”

I nodded, “Yeah, can’t be too safe.” I turned around to look at him, “This is a place where you have to forget it’s location. You can’t tell anybody. There are a lot of men in this city that would love to know where the center is. If you tell, you’re putting a lot of people at risk.”

He looked almost hurt, but then his face softened, “You’re trusting me.” It wasn’t a question, it was statement of fact.

“I am.” I smiled, nodding my head.

“See it’s a beginning,” he beamed.

I stood there just taking in the sight of this handsome man who, for some unknown reason, wants to be with me. He wants to explore my innermost desires and bring them out so that I don’t feel like I am suffocating in them.

He ran the back of his thumb down around my jaw line. I could feel the heat of his touch linger. His face came closer to mine and my heartbeat picked up speed. I tilted my head as he brought his lips to mine. His lips were soft and warm. I wrapped my hands around the back of his neck, letting my fingers twirl in his soft hair. His arms reached behind me. One was on the small of my back, the other behind my neck, pulling me closer. My breathing increased as I felt his tongue trace the curve of my lower lip. I responded by allowing him access, and moaning when our tongues met in a warm, wet, and sweet dance. I could feel the muscles of his upper body flex as I wrapped my leg around his upper thigh, trying to get some friction. He groaned as he thrust his very erect penis into my hip.

I suddenly became aware that we were no longer alone when I heard an, “Oh, My?” from Carol and a deep throat clearing which I assumed was Edwards father.

I broke away from his body and standing in the entrance to the center was the two interrupters. Dr. Cullen looked like he was ready to burst, and Carol looked at me and winked with a big ‘that a girl’ grin on her face.

I looked at Edward, and he had a smug look on his face. Me I was blushing so hard I thought my face would pop.

Dr. Cullen cleared his throat again, “Are you ready Edward?... or do you need a few more minutes?” he added with a chuckle.

Oh my god, how come the earth never opens to swallow you up when you need it to?

Edward beamed at me, still looking kind of smug. “Where is your car?”

“Umm.. It’s down in the parking deck, under the building.”

“Will you be safe getting there?”

I nodded.

“Ok... then I’m ready dad”

Edward looked at me with a gleam in his eye, leaned over and kissed me softly. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow night.”

“Ok.”

He smiled.

“Bella it was nice to meet you.” Dr. Cullen walked up to me with a smile on his face, he shook my hand.

“It was nice to meet you too, Carlisle.”

They turned and were walking away when his father clapped Edward on the back. “Why don’t I get a kiss like that?” He was still laughing when they closed the steel door.

“Holy Hell girl! What was that?” Now Carol was laughing. I shook my head and stepped past her to enter the building.

“Come on Bella, tell me!” I kept waking trying to think of what to say. When I reached my office, Carol was still giggling.

“Well, it was a kiss.”

“Sweetie, that was more than a kiss. I thought you two were going to go at it in the courtyard.”

“It was…pretty hot” I flushed.

“I’ll say,” she agreed.

After a few seconds she asked if I was ready to go. I nodded. We turned out the lights, checked the security alarm and headed to the garage.

“So...Dr. Cullen is going to help us?” I asked as we reached our cars.

“I think he is. He was really great with Sally, she was relaxed around him, and he seemed to have a lot of compassion for her predicament.”

“That’s good, he seems really nice.”

“Not as nice as his son though.” Carol snickered.

I shook my head grinning.

As she was stepping into her car I called out, “Carol!”

She looked over at me.

“I just wanted you to know, Edward doesn’t have a little peen.”

She started laughing along with me as we got in our cars.

It wasn’t quite dark when I pulled into my driveway pressing the garage door opener. I’d been gone thirteen exhausting hours and all I wanted to do was sit in my tub and enjoy a glass of wine.

“Hey Seth, were you a good boy today?” I said as I patted his head. After feeding Seth, I headed down the hall with half a bottle of red wine and a glass.

I started the water for the tub, turning the lights down and put some soft music on. Once my hair was up and my clothes in the hamper, I lowered myself into the hot water, turning the jets to a low setting. As I sat there sipping my wine, I contemplated all that Edward had said today. Was this something I was willing to explore? Am I willing to open myself up to him? Will he still think I’m worth it when he finds out how fucked up I am? Pouring the last of the wine into the glass, I figured it was time to get out.

Once I was dried off with my robe wrapped securely around me, I sat on the edge of my bed rubbing lotion onto my legs, when my phone chirped. Checking it I saw that I had three missed text messages.

I was just making sure you got home safe - E

Twenty minutes later:

Are you home or are you still at the center? - E

The last one was fifteen minutes ago:

Isabella - I’m starting to worry – Edward

Oh my - I got an Isabella and an Edward. I texted him back immediately.

Sorry - I was taking a bath. Yes, I am home safe – B

I’m relieved that you are home. You must be all pruney from being in the water so long - E

I was starting to prune up a little bit. But I’m still in one piece. -B

Well that’s good to know, I like you the way you are. Are you getting ready for bed? You had a long day.- E

Yes - the whole week has been long, but I have some papers I need to grade, and I have to finish putting the final together. So I will be up for at least two more hours - B

Will you sleep late in the morning? You need rest. - E

I plan to. Depends on Seth, he likes his breakfast in a timely fashion. He can be insistent - B

Most males are. I’m going to let you go so you can get your work done and get to sleep, pleasant dreams, Isabella - E

You too Edward - Goodnight. – B

I graded the last four reports, pulled the final document up on my computer, but I couldn’t get my mind off of the words that Edward had said while we were on the street. I laid there wondering if I could really give myself whole heartily over to Edward. He was handsome, intelligent and made me feel safe.

I got up to use the bathroom, and then walked across the hall to my office. Pulling the two books I wanted off the shelf, I went back to my bed. I haven’t looked at these books for almost a year. I read them before; but I figured that if I was actually considering taking Edward up on his proposition, I wanted to know what I was getting into. I started with Different Loving.

As I settled into bed, my mind filled with all the possibilities. The first time I read this book, I couldn’t understand how in the world someone could find pleasure in being dominated. How pain or humiliation could bring satisfaction? As I began to delve into this world of power exchange, I understood that it is about the submission of yourself. The submissive gives themselves over willingly, giving up control for a designated time frame. The more I understood the mindset of the submissive, the more I saw myself. There was something in me that just wanted to give all power over to someone else. To get lost in the sensations. I wasn’t sure how much pain I would like, but I sure wanted to find out.

I checked out web sites and did some personal interviews for my Thesis - at least that’s what I told myself. I found a rope bondage technique called Kinbaku that created intricate designs of knots and rope around the submissive’s body. The submissive’s looked beautiful, peaceful, and secure. That’s the feeling I craved, security.

I would find myself surfing through bondage paraphernalia. Wondering what a crop would feel like on my skin, the smell of leather from the gag in my mouth, and it turned me on. I would find myself masturbating to the images of dark eyes and strong hands on my bottom, while I begged to climax.

Now Edward is offering me this, and there is something inside me that wants to jump at the opportunity. Yes, we definitely needed to talk. Yawning, I looked at the clock -1:45- turning out the light I settled under the blankets, closed my eyes and let sleep take me.

Somewhere in the recesses of my brain, I’m aware that I’m lying on a leather covered table. My skin is slick with perspiration. My hands are tied above my head; my eyes are covered with some sort of blindfold. I can feel warm hands running along the curves of my breasts as my nipples harden. A breath by my ear whispers, “Just feel it, Isabella.” I take comfort in the voice. Fingers rub more forcefully over my nipples and begin to pinch and tug. Something cold and slicky is on my belly; I suck in a breath at the sensation. One of my nipples is pinched tighter. I gasp, and as he takes the other nipple in his hand he reaches up to remove the blindfold.

“I want to see your eyes.” I look into his beautiful green eyes that are filled with desire. He reaches out and attaches the other clamp, never taking his eyes off mine. I hum in satisfaction.

“Keep your eyes on me Isabella, and don’t make a sound.” He begins to run his hands from my face down over my breasts. As he moves closer to my core his touch becomes firmer. I close my eyes.

“I told you to keep your eyes on me!” I look back at him, but his eyes are no longer green, they’re blue. His hair is now long blond strands. His voice is cold and I start to panic. But I can’t move. His soft touch becomes a slap in the face. He grabs my arms and begins shaking me. “I told you Bitch, you’ll never get away from me!” He slaps my face again.

My eyes spring open as I leap up in the bed. My heart is pounding in my chest; I can feel the sweat on my forehead as I try to get my breathing under control. Looking around the room, Seth is standing by his bed watching me; the clock says 7:45. I take another deep breath to let the tension go. It was only a dream. My breathing is slowly coming back to normal as I realize I’m safe.

“Come on Seth, let’s go get some breakfast.”

Taking the book from last night, along with me, I glance at the security system in the living room as I let the aroma of fresh coffee lead me into the kitchen.

Seth goes out to do his business while I get myself a cup of coffee. I have a few slices of raisin bread left, so I plop a piece in the toaster and take a yogurt out while I get the butter from the fridge. Looking at the contents of the fridge reminds me that I’d better do some grocery shopping.

When the toast is done, I sat down at the table reading some more while I ate my breakfast. After a second cup of coffee Seth wonders in looking for his breakfast. Taking the pot of coffee over to the table I was about to sit back down when the house phone rang, startling me. - I was still a little jumpy from my dream- picking up the phone I look at the caller ID -Leah

“Hey girl, what ya doing calling so early?” I asked.

“It’s almost nine Bells, you didn’t answer your cell so I called the house number.”

I looked at the clock on the microwave; damn it is almost nine. “Yeah, it’s still in my room on the charger. So, what’s up?” I figured she wanted to hear what happened Thursday night.

“Well it’s a really nice morning and I need some exercise because my ass is getting so big Jake is going to start using it for target practice.” I laughed. “You think that’s funny?”

“Yes I do, besides your ass isn’t big. You are having a baby. What do you expect?”

She sighed, “I didn’t expect my ass to blow up like the Goodyear blimp. Anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to go for a walk in the park?”

“Yeah, that sounds great, Seth likes the park. I have to shower and dress, can you give me a half an hour or so?” I asked as I started straightening up the kitchen.

“Yeah, it will take me that long to waddle over there.”

I laughed again, “Ok, see ya soon, love you.”

“Love you too, Bells.”

I showered, threw my hair up in a messy bun, and put on some mascara so that I didn’t look so tired. I dressed in a black pair of yoga pants and a form fitting gray t-shirt. Leah was already in the kitchen when I came down. She had on a pair of khaki Capri’s and a maternity shirt that read: ‘I may be pregnant on the outside, but on the inside I’m a hot chick.’

“Hey girl, you ready?”

I grabbed a few dog snacks, hooked Seth to the leash, picked up a doggy doo bag, and we walked out the door. It was a beautiful spring morning, perfect for a walk. We traveled the three blocks to the park; it was one of the reasons why I loved this neighborhood. The city owned park housed a few baseball fields, a play ground, a public pool, and a three mile walking trail.

“I think we are going to go to Forks next week for Mother’s Day” Leah looked at me to get my reaction.

“That’s good, Sue will be glad to see you.”

“Yeah, she would be glad to see you too.”

I knew that was coming. I sighed, “I’m sure she would, but I don’t think I’m going to go back until Graduation weekend. I’ll send her flowers and give her a call.”

Leah gave me a strange look. “Can you at least think about it? You can drive with us. We’ll go straight to La Push and come back later that night.”

I shook my head, “You know that they will want to go out for dinner, and Charlie will want me to come to the house so he can show off his newest improvement.”

“Well that’s not so bad, we will all be together, he won’t bother you.”

“I’ll think about it, and let you know,” I shrugged.

“That means, no.” She huffed.

I looked at her, “That means I’ll think about it,” I answered with an annoyed tone.

I didn’t want to continue with this conversation, so I changed the subject. “So, what are your plans for this weekend?” We stopped by a tree so that Seth could pee, when he was done we continued with the walk.

“We are going out for lunch, and then Jake and I are going to go register for baby items.”

“That will be nice.” I was making a mental note to call Sue about putting together a baby shower.

“Why don’t you come with us?’

“No, you and Jake go, that’s like a couple thing you should do together. Besides I have some work to do.” I shook my head.

She stopped turning towards me, “Bella, you need to get a life. Preferably one with a man in it, with some hot sex, and mind blowing orgasms.”

“I have orgasms,” I sulked.

“I’m not talking about self induced, or battery assisted, I’m talking about a warm blooded hot hard cock that makes you scream with pleasure.”

“Is that what I need?” I laughed.

She looked at me completely serious, “Yes...it is.”

“Speaking of which,” she went on, “What’s up with that guy from the other night.”

“Edward,”I smiled and shrugged.

“Jake didn’t tell me his name. He just said that the guy was eye-fucking you all night. Then he was groping you on the curb.”

I stopped walking. “Oh My God! He was not! Yes we were stealing glances at each other. On the curb he asked for my number so we can go for coffee, and he kissed my cheek. I would hardly call that groping.”

Leah huffed and rolled her eyes, “That husband of mine, he had you fucking him in the bathroom.”

“Get the hell out of here; you wait until I see him.” She laughed, but I was sort of annoyed.

“So tell me about...Edward?”

I smiled again, I couldn’t help it, every time I thought of him I just felt warm. So I filled her in on what happened at the club. How I knew Alice and Aro, some of what we talked about. Then I told her about him coming into the pub and his father.

“So, his dad is going to work at the center?”

“Looks that way.” We had to stop for Seth to do his business. I told her about my mini breakdown, and how he held me.

She rubbed my arm, “Were you ok?”

“Yeah, I just felt so safe with him.” I told her about the kiss in the courtyard.

“Was it a kiss...or a kiss?” she asked with raised eyebrows. I bit my lip and felt my face heat up

“Holy Shit! It was that good?”

“It was like tongue sex.” We both stood there giggling.

When Seth was done I bent down to pick up the mess; I wasn’t paying attention and Seth’s leash got away from me.

“Seth!” He started running toward the ball field, “SHIT!”

I ran after him, he ran up to a man who reached down and held on to his leash.

When I got over there I was looking at Seth, “You’re a naughty dog! No treats for you!” I scowled at my dog trying to look intimidating. “I’m sorry he got away from me.” I said as I looked up.

“Isabella.”

Oh shit, so much for dry panties.

“Edward!” I’m sure the shock was plain on my face.

“I believe this is yours,” he said as he handed me the leash with a smirk.

“Bella!”

“Hi Alice.” I said with a wave. She got up off her folding chair walking over to me with a toddler on her hip, giving me a one arm hug.

Leah came up behind me. “You got him Bells?”

“Yeah.”

She sort of bent around her belly grabbing Seth’s nose. “You know I can’t run, you’re such a brat, your name suits you!” I giggled as Leah stood back up.

“Little Bella! What are you doing here girl?”

“Hi Emmet, we’re just out for a walk”

Dr. Cullen came over with a woman holding his hand. She was slender and shapely, with honey colored hair. “Hello Bella.”

“Hi Dr. Cullen.”

He turned to the woman, “Sweetheart this is Bella, Edward’s...friend,” and he chuckled.

The woman stretched out her hand, “It’s nice to meet you, I’m Esme.”

I nodded and shook her hand, “Pleased to meet you.”

Leah cleared her throat from beside me.

“Oh, excuse me. Leah, this is Edward and his family. Alice is his sister and her husband Jasper. Umm… Emmet, his brother and his wife Rosalie. Rosalie is going to have a baby too. And his parents Dr. and Mrs. Cullen. Everyone this is my sister Leah.” I looked at Edward. “Umm, Jake’s wife.”

Everyone said ‘hi’ and shook hands. Rosalie was talking to Leah about where she bought her shirt at. I was half listening when Alice asked, “Why are you in this park Bella?”

“We live a few blocks away,”I motioned with my hand.

Alice’s eyes lit up.

“Do you all live together?”Edward asked.

I giggled and he narrowed his eyes.

“No, I live on Ferndale and Leah lives on the next block, on Spruce.” He nodded.

“Oh,” Alice got serious, “Are you telling me that we live less than a mile from each other?”

Dr. Cullen cut in, “I think it’s a little further than a mile Alice. But you are very close to Edward.”

“Do you live in this area?” I looked at Edward.

“Yeah I do, over on Cypress.” He nodded.

“How long have you lived there Bella?” Alice was very curious.

“Four years, I like it here. It’s quiet, it’s low crime, and close to walking trails.”

Leah’s phone rang, “Excuse me,” she said and turned to answer the phone.

Edward was watching me as I talked to his family. He didn’t say very much and I wondered if maybe I was unwelcome.

Leah came back over and pulled me aside, “Bells, Jake wants to stop at some auto shop and they close at noon, so he’s coming to pick me up… Do you want us to drive you home?”

I shook my head, “No, no, I’m going to finish the trail. You guys go have fun, and pick out lots of really good stuff for me to buy.”

She laughed and eyed up Edward, “Oh yeah, your right ‘sex-on-a-stick,’” she whispered with a giggle. “Anyway, you sure you’ll be alright?”

“Its broad day light Leah, I can walk three blocks by myself. I’ll be fine.” I rolled my eyes.

“Ok listen, call me later and let me know about next weekend; he won’t come to La Push Bells, you know he won’t. Sam would kick his ass.” She hugged me.

I sighed, “I’ll talk to ya later, go before Jake starts worrying. Besides, you know how long it takes you to waddle anywhere.” I laughed, Leah was faking shock.

“You wait Bitch; you’ll be waddling one day too.”

We hugged good bye, Leah called over my shoulder, “Good bye everybody, it was nice to meet you.”

They all said good bye and Leah walked back towards the entrance. I turn back around to see Edward watching me with an emotionless face.

Chapter 2

BPOV

After Aro introduced us, I sat down next to a woman who said her name was Heidi. Jake sat across from me and as the waitress came around, he ordered a beer and white wine.

The room we were in was a smaller area than the two main rooms. Three of the walls were completely covered with dark gold silk. The other wall was some kind of privacy glass, allowing us to see into the rest of the club, but not allowing those outside to see in. There were a dozen people sitting around the four tables that were pushed together. A half a dozen tables occupied the rest of the room, with a small bar area tucked into the corner.

While I was looking around the room I spotted Edward walking from the bar towards our table. He had two bottles of beer in one hand and a pitcher of clear liquid in the other.

I couldn’t turn my head away as I watched him move. Ok, to be honest, I didn’t want to. I mean who could look away from someone who was just oozing sex. His eyes met mine and I gazed into them for a moment, before I forced myself to look away with a blush.

He chuckled while approaching the table, setting down the pitcher and handing Jake one beer and Heidi’s husband -I believe his name is Demetri- the other one. Turning, he took a wine glass off the waitress’s tray - hmm, she must have been following him- and a large red glass with a lemon stuck on top of it.

He handed me the wine with a grin on his face. “White wine for Ms. Isabella.”

I reached out to take it from him slightly meeting my fingers against his, again feeling that tingle.

“Thank you, Edward.”

He smiled wider, “You’re very welcome, Isabella.”

I had to take a deep breath so that I wouldn’t embarrass myself.

He placed the red glass at the end of the table; he removed half a dozen shot glasses, placing them next to the pitcher of clear liquid.

“Thank you Lauren.” His voice was firm and it was clear he was effectively dismissing her.

She eyed him for a moment, “You’re welcome, do you need anything else?” she practically purred.

I hated her.

“No that will be all.”

I was shaken out of my conjecture by the sound of euphoric laughter that was coming from behind me; as I glanced over my shoulder, my eyes lit up.

“Bella?”

Leaping out of my chair, I hugged the small energetic pixy of woman, “Oh My God...Alice!”

“What are you doing here?” We chuckled together at our spontaneous question.

“My sister-in-law is having a baby; we are here to celebrate with them.”

I narrowed my eyes, “Oh.” I couldn’t think of anything else to say.

We let each other go and she walked around the table hugging and kissing everyone. The man that accompanied her sat in the empty seat between Jake and Edward.

Jake put his hand out to the man on his right, “Jacob Black.”

“Jasper Whitlock, Alice’s husband; pleased to meet you.” He had a slight southern drawl, he turned to me expectantly.

“Bella Swan.” I replied, shaking his hand just as Alice sat down next to me.

“So, what are you doing here?”

I looked at her to reply when I heard a velvet voice from the end of the table that sent shivers to my girly parts.

“Isabella wrote her Thesis on alternative lifestyles, Aro helped her with information.” I smiled at Edward, because that was an acceptable reason.

“Oh... sooo you and Jacob?” Alice asked with curiosity. From the corner of my eye I saw Edward lean forward in interest. Jake gagged and spit his beer out of his mouth.

“No, No, No... Jake...” I turned to look at him quickly before responding to Alice; he was still coughing and wiping his face with a napkin. “Oh... That’s just...wrong!” I shuttered.

“Because you are married?” She asked.

“Was... Not anymore, I took my maiden name back. I didn’t want anything from him.” I said the last part softly.

Alice leaned towards me with a broad smile, “I’m glad, he was a bastard!”

Jake started laughing, “Oh, I like her.”

I glared at him and he shrugged, “What? He is a bastard.”

I sighed because I couldn’t argue with that.

“So Alice, how do you know Isabella?” Edward asked his sister, but his eyes were on me.

Usually I would correct people and ask to be called Bella, but there was something sensual about the way he said Isabella. It made my belly tighten and my girly parts warm.

“We had some classes together at the community college,” her eyes turned back to me. “You transferred then, right?”

I nodded taking a sip of my wine, “Mmhmm, Dartmouth.”

From the corner of my eye I could see Edward’s face turn into a broad smile. “Emmett!” He called as he looked me in the eye. “We have another Big Greener down here!” And he winked at me, making my face heat up.

“No way!” The loud voice boomed through the room. Emmett moved swiftly to stand behind Jake. “Who?”

Jake turned saying over his shoulder, “Bella, she had a full scholarship. You should have seen her father’s face when she showed him the letter” I shook my head and blushed. “Better yet, you should have seen the Bastard’s face, that was priceless.”

Jake laughed, and I looked down at the table, because that wasn’t a night I wanted to think about right now.

Emmett questioned Jake, “Bastard?”

Jasper smiled and Edward replied, “Isabella’s ex-husband.”

Again with the Isabella, if he keeps that up I’m going to have to go to the bathroom and dry out my panties.

“Someone need an ass kicking little Bella? Cuz, you know I’m not opposed to opening up a can of whoop ass. Especially for a fellow Big Greener.”

“No worries Emmett, it’s been taken care of.” I assured Emmett.

Jake snorted, shaking his head “Yeah, for the most part.” Emmett glanced at Jake, expecting more of an explanation; I shook my head at him imploring him to just drop it.

When I glanced at Edward he had a look of concentration on his face, but he didn’t say anything.

“Fellow Greener’s, stand up!” Emmett picked up the pitcher with the clear liquid, pouring three shots; I rose and he handed me a shot glass. Edward stood up taking the other one, I smiled no wonder he seemed so interested.

“To the class of 2002," Emmett said.

“2004,"came from Edward.

“2006," I smiled as we clicked our glasses and did our shots. Oh my…kamikazes. Yummy, smooth, and warm.

“Emmett, don’t be doing too many shots or you’ll be sleeping in the car!” He looked over at his beautiful wife.

“Awe Rosie, it was one shot” he whined.

I giggled because it was comical, this big bear of a man actually whined. Jasper smirked and Edward chuckled. Emmett leaned down to whisper, “You know how pregnant women are.”

Alice yelled, “No Emmett, how are pregnant women?”

We all snickered.

Rosalie was right next to Emmet immediately. “What are you saying?”

He just shook his head, “Nothing baby, nothing. Just talking Dartmouth memories and I said you were pregnant and we are really happy about it.’

I had to look down at the table, and bite my bottom lip to keep from laughing. Unfortunately for Emmett his family didn’t hold back and all three of them, including Jake, snickered and laughed.

Emmett shook his head, “I see how it is; little Bella, I’ll talk to you later. The rest of you can kiss my ass!” He followed Rose and the five of us burst out laughing.

“How long have you been married?” I asked Alice.

She beamed and looked at Jasper. “Five years, we have two children,” she was reaching into her purse to pull out her phone. After clicking some buttons she showed me a picture of two adorable round faced children.

“Vincent will be five in two months, and Mia just turned two.” She pulled up a few more pictures, one of Mia with spaghetti dripping off her head and one of Vincent dressed in a Mariners outfit.

“They’re adorable,” I smiled at her. “Did you finish your degree?”

“Oh, yes. I have my own business,” she raised her eyebrows suggestively. “I design custom made naughty lingerie.”

I chuckled and was going to inquire more information when Jake leaned across the table, “Do you do maternity?”

I looked at him while Alice leaned closer to him. “What do you have in mind, Jacob?” She asked, seductively.

Jake’s eyes looked like they were going to pop out of his head and he turned a shade of red I didn’t think was possible.

Alice sat back in her chair. “That good, uh?” She said adding a wink before reaching into her purse and handing him a card. “Tell ya what, you give me a call and I’ll hook you up with whatever your little mind can conceive.”

I snickered, Jake looked at me pointing a finger, “Don’t you tell her.”

“I’m not saying anything” I told him with a laugh holding my hands up in surrender then added “You better hurry up though, you only have a few more months.”

Alice flicked her wrist in the air in a dismissive gesture “Anything that is let out can be pulled back in. Besides, all women want to feel sexy, even pregnant ones. I’m designing a whole line for Rose. Also, your wife will more than likely have at least one more baby, so then she’ll be set for it. If not, I can alter it.” She looked at Jake again nodding, “Yeah, you call me.”

Jake nodded his head, tucking Alice’s card away.

Throughout this conversation Edward was talking to Jasper; every now and then I would steal glances at him, sometimes he would catch me, and other times when I looked in his direction he was watching me.

“You teach Bella?” Alice asked, and I was wondering how she knew. Jake was nodding so I guess in my Edward-induced daze I missed him telling her.

“I do, Psychology at UW. It’s only entry level, but I like it.”

She pointed towards her brother, “Edward teaches at UW, Anatomy. I’m surprised you never ran into each other.”

Edward cleared his throat, “Alice, I’m in the science building and the campus is large, unless I wanted to, I don’t think I would run into Isabella.”

There goes that Isabella again; I had to part my thighs to cool off the heat.

Jake gahuffed, “More like Bella might run into you,” he said with a snicker.

I glared at Jake with an evil eye and then turned to Edward, “I don’t know about that, you had an unplanned run in with me earlier,” I said with a smile.

He grinned wickedly, “So I did. I enjoyed it too.”

Before I could stop myself I blurted out, “Must be fate.” As soon as the words left my mouth I could have kicked myself.

But I swear I heard him murmer, “just might be.”

The rest of the evening fell into easy banter, Emmett with his loud voice, Rose always having to rein him in. Edward got up a few times; I suppose to take care of some club business. Alice talked about her business and the children. Vinny, as she called him, was starting little league and was excited. Mia was just starting to go on the potty and they were thinking about having one more child maybe next year.

Jake spoke with the people around him, and asked Jasper some questions about labor; turning pale at the description of crowning making Alice and I laughed at his expression. I turned red as hell when Jake asked if Leah would return to normal after the birth, because he was hoping she wouldn’t be, ‘loose.’

Jasper assured him that all would be ok, and Alice told him that as long as she did her Keagles she would be tight as a drum. That launched us into a twenty minute discussion on what a Keagle is and how to do them.

After three glasses of wine I almost died when Heidi who was sitting next to me blurted, “I’m doing them now! Come on ladies, everyone Keagle!”

Jake had a blank look on his face. “You mean, you’re doing them now, in public?” Heidi, Alice and I nodded. “That’s just wrong,” Jake muttered and we burst out laughing.

Aro came back to our area smiling, “I see everyone is having a good time. I’m so glad. Before anyone leaves I would like to propose a toast.”

Edward was just sitting back down. I had no idea how he knew he was needed since no one came to get him. He would just get up, sunder through the club and then return.

“Please raise your glasses. To Rose and Emmett, may your child grow to be strong, healthy, and independent. May love surround him or her, everyday of his life. Salute!” Glasses clinked and a resounding, “Salute!” was heard as we toasted to a new life that was forming. Aro excused himself, leaving the group to continue on enjoying the night.

“You ready Bells? I told Leah I would be home by 1:00, its quarter of.”

I looked at my watch, “Oh my word! Yeah, I’m ready.”

Alice grabbed my hand, “Ohhh...don’t go Jasper and I will take you home.”

I smiled at her, “I’ve really got to go. I have some appointments tomorrow, well, today. But let’s get together and have lunch.”

Alice smiled, “Or, we can go shopping!” She clapped her hands, giggling while bouncing up and down.

I nodded, “Ok. Sure, shopping.” We exchanged numbers and hugged. I said good-bye to the rest of the table and congratulated Emmett and Rosalie.

Emmett wrapped me in a big hug. “Us Big Greener’s stick together. Right little Bella?”

I smiled, “Right, Emmett.”

I thanked them again for allowing us to intrude on their party, and for making us feel so welcomed. Yes, I was stalling; Edward wasn’t back from wherever he had to gone, and I was really hoping I would get to say goodnight. I sighed and started to follow Jake through the club.

EPOV

This night was turning out to be very interesting. To say I was surprised that my sister was acquainted with Isabella would be an understatement. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised; my little sister was a social butterfly. Plus the nature of her business put her in intimate contact with all makes of people, from the wealthiest on down.

Then, I couldn’t help that my mind kept wondering if Isabella was a client of Alice’s. I started coming up with all kinds of images: Isabella in a dark blue boned corset, cinching in her waist, pushing her breasts out over the top allowing me access to her pert pink nibbles; or a black netted, crotchless cat suit that hugged every delectable curve as she is bent over my whipping horse. I needed to take a deep breath with that image. Breathing and allowing the oxygen to flow back through my system, because my dick was causing my pants to get mighty tight in that area. I figured I’d better ask, before my dick exploded with all the scenarios I was coming up with.

I nodded when Alice said they went to school together. I was away at college when Alice started at the local community college. She didn’t want to leave Jasper, and we all understood that. He was just starting his residency in Port Angeles and she could take her pre-reqs and then transfer.

Isabella was married young - wonder if she was pregnant? - seems like Alice didn’t like him. Unusual since my sister has a way about her that she always sees the good in people. So her dislike of him makes me worry. Dartmouth? Too good to be true.

“Hey Emmett, we got another Big Greener down here!”

I knew he would do a shot to that announcement, hell he doesn’t need a reason, but it helps a little with Rosalie. Jacob said she had a full scholarship and that her father was proud, I smiled, he should have been. Hell, I was fucking proud of her and I had only just met her. At the mention of the ‘Bastard’ her eyes fell and her face was masked with sadness. What the fuck did he do to her?

After the toast and humor at Emmett’s expense the conversation at the table went into easy banter. My pocket buzzed, Tyler needed me at the door.

Three girls were attempting to get in without an escort; they were cute and dressed appropriately, but they were having a hard time understanding the word, no.

“Please? We’ll behave.”

I shook my head, “Sorry ladies.”

The taller pretty blond with obvious fake breasts took two steps forward, rubbing her hand down the front of my shirt over my pecks. “Please? You can be our escort. All three of us. We can make you happy and you can do anything you want to us. Anything.” She drew the last word out into a whisper by my ear.

I took a deep breath, grabbed her hand and grinned, “I don’t think you can handle my, anything. Come back next time with an escort, and I will be very happy to let you in. But tonight, it’s not going to happen.”

The tall one huffed and turned around, “Asshole! You don’t know what you’re missing! I could rock your world!” She shouted, as the three of them stalked off together.

Turning to Tyler I laughed, “I’m going back in, call me if you need me.” I was still laughing as I entered the club, making my way back to the VIP room. Isabella was looking at pictures of my niece and nephew, they were cute kids and yes little Vinny thought I was better than Sponge Bob. What can I say? The kid has taste.

My phone buzzed again, Mike and Eric were ready for their breaks. I took Mike’s post in the front area. It was a quiet night, the band was playing in the other area, and people were filtering back and forth. Most people just want to go out for a few hours, drink a little bit, and enjoy the night. It helps that Aro always held Open Door Night on a Thursday. Tomorrow is a working day for most of Seattle and that tends to cut down on problems; but every now and then someone gets beer muscles, so we had to be on guard.

Mike was coming back and I went to relieve Eric. Aro came up to me and asked how the VIP room was going. I informed him it was going well. He wanted to come in and toast Emmett and Rose before anyone left. I was looking over his shoulder at a couple on the dance floor, they were obviously drunk, but at the moment they weren’t causing any trouble.

“Aro, what is the story with Isabella?” I asked without looking in his eye.

He chuckled, pulling my attention to him. “I met Ms Swan, oh my, three years ago. I told you Edward, she interviewed me for her thesis, I handed out her survey then collected them for her. Throughout the two years she worked on her thesis, we became... I don’t know what our relationship is. She does work with something that I believe very strongly in. She has come to me for fund raising and other business related problems... That’s all.”

“Yeah, but why is she here? I mean you gave her a pass, did she express interest in seeing the club?”

He just grinned.

“What are you grinning for?” I was slightly annoyed.

He shook his head placing his hand on my shoulder, “You know Edward, my boy, I’m a lot older than you, I have wisdom and experience. Sometimes you just get a vibe. I offered Ms. Swan to come see the club because when we talked she had questions that I felt were of a more personal nature, rather than academic or business related. She’s a diamond in the rough, a very beautiful diamond in the rough. If I were twenty-five years younger and didn’t have your Aunt Jane, I would refine that diamond until it sparkled. But be careful with Ms. Swan, she’s been through a lot.”

What the hell does that mean?

“I was just asking, I’m not thinking about refining Isabella.”

“Of course you’re not.”

He fucking laughed as he walked away.

After Eric returned I pointed out the couple that needed to be watched making my way back into the VIP room. As I was entering the room loud laughter was coming from Emmett’s group. The women were laughing so hard they had tears in their eye, the men were smirking, but poor Jacob looked like he was going to be sick and he kept saying, “That’s not right.” I asked Jasper what I missed, he shook his head and said something about Keagles and tightness. I guess it was one of things where you had to be there.

I would steal glances at Isabella as I talked with Jasper. Vinny had a little league game on Saturday morning and the whole family was going to go. That kid loved baseball, was he a natural? No. But hey, what five years old is? The games were fun to watch, and the weather was supposed to be nice. Afterwards Alice and Jasper wanted the family to come to their house for lunch; Jasper wanted me to pick up a case of beer, and that I could do.

I chanced a glance in Bella’s direction again and caught hold of her brown orbs watching me. I smirked as she blushed and looked back to Alice. Damn she was cute when she did that, so sweet and innocent, a diamond in the rough. Hmm, I wonder how rough?

Damn, stop thinking like that Edward, or you’re going to be pitching a tent big enough for a family of ten.

Alice questioned the fact that we had not run into each other at the college. I told her I work in the science lab area; Isabella is in the liberal arts area so it would be strange to “run into” her.

Isabella looked me right in the eye smiling, “I don’t know about that, you had an unplanned run in with me earlier.”

I grinned at her, “So I did.” Adding, “I enjoyed it too.”

She blurted out, “Must be fate.” Then dropped her eyes and shaking her head.

I kept watching her thinking to myself, “Just might be.”

Where the hell did that come from? I don’t believe in fate. We are what we make of ourselves. We change our course of direction by the decisions we make. I shook my head as Aro’s words came back to haunt me, “If I was twenty-five years younger,” I felt a growl grow in my chest. “I would refine that diamond until it shined.” Fuck that, if anyone is refining Isabella it will be me.

True to his word in came the diamond miner. He walked around the table asking how everyone was enjoying their night and the company. Everyone answered in the affirmative. He toasted to Emmett and Rose, blessing their unborn child and basically being glad that our family is thriving and growing.

After he left, I had to go out to the dance area. Eric was escorting the drunken couple off the dance floor. Mike came over to help him; it looked like they had it under control, so I just took up a post and watched. After that was over, I was talking with one of the members; he wanted to know if he could get a pass for someone he met tonight. I told him I would get him the forms to fill out.

As I was talking with him, I saw Jacob walking through the crowd. He’s hard to miss; he’s at least six foot four, muscular and stands out with that black hair. Isabella was on his heels and it appeared that they were leaving. I asked Felix if he could give me ten minutes then I would be back with the form he needed.

I quickly made my way over to the retreating couple, “You two leaving?”

Jacob stopped abruptly causing Isabella to stumble slightly. On instinct I reached out to grab her, almost relishing that feeling I got from the contact with her skin.

Isabella turned and Jacob responded, “Yeah, we have to get going. It’s late, I have work, Bella has a busy day tomorrow and my wife is waiting for me.”

“Well, perhaps you should say goodnight to Aro? It would be rude not to.”

Isabella flushed; yeah I was pulling out all stops so I could speak to her again, so what?

“Just a few more minutes Jake, I don’t want Aro to think I don’t appreciate his hospitality.”

“Ok Bells, let’s make it quick though, Leah is going to kill me.”

They followed me over to Aro. Isabella thanked him; then he reached out and brought her hand to his lips kissing the back of it. I wanted to rip her hand from his grasp, instead I scowled. He looked at me amused.

“Ah, Ms. Swan, I am so glad that you came tonight. See? I told you nothing to be afraid of, just people. No demons, werewolves, or vampires. Nothing will bite you here, unless you want them to.” He chuckled, “Perhaps you would come back on a night when the club is at its usual pace? You could get a better look.”

Isabella looked slightly nervous, “um, I...I don’t know about that. Um, Jake, well Leah, his wife, is really pregnant and I don’t know if he could come again.”

Aro looked to Jacob, “Congratulations my boy, children are a blessing from God himself!” Smiling back at Isabella, “You still have the pass I gave you, do you not?”

“Well, yes sir I do.”

He gestured with his hand, “That is all you need. Basically, what that card says is that I am vouching for you. No escort required.”

Jacob shifted behind her, “Yeah, Bella I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that. You shouldn’t be out alone that late at night. With what you do, it’s not safe.”

I looked at him, wondering what the hell she does. She teaches Psych to college kids for Christ’s sake. Nothing dangerous there.

Aro must know what Jacob was talking about because he sighed. “Yes well, perhaps Mr. Black is right.”

Jacob nodded in an ‘I told you so’ kind of way.

“I have a thought; Edward my boy, perhaps you could escort Ms. Swan? Would that make you feel better Mr. Black?”

Jacob didn’t look like that idea made him feel any better.

Isabella glanced in my direction. “Aro, I don’t want to burden Edward, he doesn’t need to babysit me.”

“Nonsense my dear, you don’t mind, do you Edward?”

I shook my head. “Not at all,” I answered. No-sir-re-bob I wouldn’t mind being with Isabella in any capacity at all.

Aro clapped his hands together, “There, it’s settled. I do so love a happy ending.” Picking up Isabella’s hand again, “You run along now my dear, you still do your work on Fridays?”

She nodded with a satisfied smile, “I do.”

He leaned closer to her, “You let me know if you need any more contributions.”

Still smiling, she raising her gleaming eyes, “We never turn down a contribution, sir.”

He chuckled, “I’ll send a check in memory of your mother.”

Her face took on a serene façade, “Thank you,” she said in a reverent voice.

He patted her hand, “You’re most welcome my dear. You have a good night also Mr. Black, and see she gets home safe.”

Jacob shook Aro’s hand, “Don’t worry I will.”

As we walked towards the exit, I wondered if Isabella would want to come with me to the club. Maybe I should start with something smaller, lunch or coffee. As we exited the building I said good night to Jacob.

He eyed me for a minute and then asked Bella, “Will you be alright here while I get the car?”

She looked around. The street was well lit, Tyler was standing off to side, and I was here. “I’ll be fine Jake.”

He nodded and walked across the street to the lot. I was just about to speak when she said, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her, “What are you sorry for Isabella?” I couldn’t for the life of me think of what she’d done. Was she apologizing for Jacob, because he was being an ass?

She sighed loudly and looked down at her hands, “For Aro putting you on the spot, that wasn’t fair; you don’t have to feel obligated to escort me. I’m not even sure I want to come.” She mumbled the last part.

I put my finger under her chin, “Isabella, look at me,” lifting just a little bit.

I stood there staring at her face, she really was beautiful, and perhaps I should call her Bella. Her eyes were deep milk chocolate that glistened with a depth of humanity. My finger tingled all the way through to my hand, sending my cock into a frenzy. I wanted to take her home with me, like a lost puppy, and see what else was lurking in her eyes.

“Isabella, you will find out that I am man that doesn’t do anything I don’t want to do.” She smiled shyly. “What I would really like to do is take you out for coffee. You’re busy on Fridays?” She nodded once. “What do you do?”

Shaking her head she bit her bottom lip between her teeth, “It’s a long story.”

“Will I get to hear that story?”

She smirked, “I don’t know...maybe.”

“Hmmm...Maybe, ugh? You know Isabella, I have ways of making you talk.’ I said with a devious voice.

Her quick gasp of shock made me chuckle. “Anyway, I’m busy Saturday but how about we go for coffee early Sunday afternoon?”

“Ok?” I wasn’t sure if that was an answer or a question.

“OK...Can I get your number so I can call you?” I pulled my phone out, as she started to rattle off her number. I was putting my phone back in my pocket just as a dark blue Honda CR-V pulled up to the curb. The window rolled down and the horn beeped, pulling me back to the here and now.

“That’s rude.” I said with contempt.

“That’s Jacob.” Isabella said with a sigh. I placed my hand on the small of her back. She seemed to melt into my hand, and I wondered how responsive she would be in my playroom or in my bed.

As I opened the door for her, she stepped down off the curb. She looked up at me and I ran the back of my thumb along her jaw line. I just wanted to feel that tingle one more time. “I’ll call you Saturday night.”

She nodded putting her petite hand around my wrist, sending shock waves through my arm. I leaned down and kissed her other cheek. She hummed, “Saturday?”

I nodded, “Saturday.”

She climbed into the car.

“Buckle up, Isabella.” I looked over and nodded, “Jacob.”

“Edward,” he replied with nod of his own. I shut the door and watched as the car drove down the street and around the corner.
I smiled at Tyler on my way back in.

“Not too bad a night,” he remarked.

I smiled, “Nope, turned out to be a very good night indeed.”
